Yoko Taro Made Sega the Enemy in 404 -Error Reset- as Being Good Would “Be Boring”

In upcoming smartphone title 404 -Game Reset-, Sega has taken over the world using moe anthropomorphized video games, and an interview describes how Yoko Taro came up with this idea that somehow got approved.

In the interview, producer Gosuke Nakamura talks about how Yoko Taro felt that Sega just being the good guys would “be boring”, and ended up suggesting that they be positioned as the bad guys instead:

4Gamer: I think everyone was surprised that Sega was portrayed as a bad corporation, but how was that received internally? There must have been criticism.

Nakamura: Of course. There were definitely voices of opposition in creating such an edgy, breakout world where our own company were the bad guys. (laughs) But to soften that would make the concept lose its edge and appeal, and if the quality isn’t there, it would end as a game of nothing but inside jokes, so we decided to try to push as far as we could. We even went so far we had to change some presentation aspects for ethical reasons. (laughs) By going through that back-and-forth testing process, we got the green light internally to go ahead with it, but it was a tall hurdle.

4Gamer: Was it Yoko-san who suggested Sega become the enemy corporation?

Nakamura: I think we both discussed and came up with it together, but Yoko-san said, “If you create a world revolving around your own company, it’s likely to just end in nothing but self-praise, and that’s boring, so if that’s the case, you may as well go as far as possible in the opposite direction and make yourselves the bad guys” as an idea. After further discussion, we ended up with the project as it is now.

4Gamer: The actual details about the gameplay haven’t been revealed yet, but can you tell us what sort of game it will be, to the extent you can discuss it?

Nakamura: As a genre, it’s an RPG, but you might want to keep the image of Yoko-san’s previous games in mind. As Yoko-san was not only involved with the world and story, but also game design as well, I can safely tell you it’s not just a regular RPG. It might have some Shmup elements as well…

404 -Game Reset- releases on smartphones in Japan come spring 2023.
