In upcoming smartphone title 404 -Game Reset-, Sega has taken over the world using moe anthropomorphized video games, and an interview describes how Yoko Taro came up with this idea that somehow got approved.
In the interview, producer Gosuke Nakamura talks about how Yoko Taro felt that Sega just being the good guys would “be boring”, and ended up suggesting that they be positioned as the bad guys instead:
4Gamer: I think everyone was surprised that Sega was portrayed as a bad corporation, but how was that received internally? There must have been criticism.
Nakamura: Of course. There were definitely voices of opposition in creating such an edgy, breakout world where our own company were the bad guys. (laughs) But to soften that would make the concept lose its edge and appeal, and if the quality isn’t there, it would end as a game of nothing but inside jokes, so we decided to try to push as far as we could. We even went so far we had to change some presentation aspects for ethical reasons. (laughs) By going through that back-and-forth testing process, we got the green light internally to go ahead with it, but it was a tall hurdle.
4Gamer: Was it Yoko-san who suggested Sega become the enemy corporation?
Nakamura: I think we both discussed and came up with it together, but Yoko-san said, “If you create a world revolving around your own company, it’s likely to just end in nothing but self-praise, and that’s boring, so if that’s the case, you may as well go as far as possible in the opposite direction and make yourselves the bad guys” as an idea. After further discussion, we ended up with the project as it is now.
4Gamer: The actual details about the gameplay haven’t been revealed yet, but can you tell us what sort of game it will be, to the extent you can discuss it?
Nakamura: As a genre, it’s an RPG, but you might want to keep the image of Yoko-san’s previous games in mind. As Yoko-san was not only involved with the world and story, but also game design as well, I can safely tell you it’s not just a regular RPG. It might have some Shmup elements as well…
404 -Game Reset- releases on smartphones in Japan come spring 2023.
I guess SEGA is an evil corpo developing mobile garbage.
Why you hate moblie and gatcha games?
I do not consider phones a gaming device. Touch screen controls severely limit the types of games you can have on it. The design of mobile games is usually focused on quick fix gameplay and predatory monetisation. Gacha in particular are absolute cancer relying on randomness and psychological tricks like FOMO to encourage you to spend more. These titles have the worst qualities of most games – always online, immersion breaking monetisation and pay to win tactics.
Don’t forget for online only game. Once they end, all your progress is lost. Just like Tera, that was a few hundred hours lost…
Worst quality? Pretty big blanket statement.
I disagree, I played Forspoken which, admittedly, is also a mistake and that was hot walking s♥♥t on fire. And it’s a AAA game.
At least in Nikke I get some nice T&A, a fairly well thought out story and actual character development. Of course, if you’re not smart enough not to gamble, which it seems like most Americans aren’t, don’t fucking play.
Haven’t used a single penny and I haven’t had any problems yet.
Just saying: there are highs and lows on both sides. If I can’t play a good game on console and I travel a lot, I can find a decent one on mobile.
Mobile games are usually designed to make you hit a paywall sooner or later.
And if you want to make progress or even be able to compete, then you necessarily have to pay for it.
You might say “but you can stop playing” and while that is technically true, the idea behind not giving the player a paywall early on is so that the player has time to create a bond with game (sounds stupid but i dont know how else to describe it) and has made quite a lot of progress, so when the time comes where the paywall is hit, then the player will have difficulty leaving the game because of all those hours he spent with it………but still has a long way to finish it. And this works far more often than not.
Besides, mobile crap is one reason why gaming as a whole turned into s♥♥t.
Everyone with more than two braincells does.
Why not? These games are always poor quality and are designed to drain your wallet.
You know what else is boring? Shitty mobile games.
> In upcoming smartphone title
Stopped caring.
WHO YA CALLIN’ RETARD,TRANNIGGER!!!!!
at least the chump’s right, stop caring if the word “smartphone” is being used for the trillionth time this year,it is actually the most pretentious thing to care for it,never mind the fact it’s another major AAA publisher’s cash-in on a stupidphone like it’s their only “””reliable””” platform…so shut the f♥♥k up and start protesting like everyone else…it could be better on a low-end “battle station” pc like the one you got back there.
Another mobile piece of s♥♥t? Yeah, f♥♥k this.
Smartphone game = Crap game
