Japanese video website Niconico has suspended Visa card payments, becoming yet another Japanese media site to either remove or suspend the payment method from an American credit card company.
The latest concerning payment processor news comes from Niconico’s recently posted message regarding the temporary suspension of Visa credit card payments:
Thank you for always using Niconico.
Due to various circumstances, starting Friday, May 10, 2024, payment of premium membership fees with Visa will be temporarily suspended.
We apologize for the sudden notice.
Perhaps the more concerning part about the ordeal is that, unlike the other Japanese websites that recently cut ties with Western credit card companies, including Getchu and DLsite, Niconico isn’t an adult site. However, the video site appears similarly targeted as if it were another ‘problematic’ website.
Niconico suspended payments using Mastercard and American Express in November, so the website currently does not support payments from any of the three major American credit card companies.
If the Japanese government had any balls, they would fully ban Mastercard and Visa in the whole country.
