The latest China quality architecture to be causing a stir is the unashamed uniformity of a vast new Hainan suburb, combining both the charms of suburban sprawl and large-scale housing projects.
On the positive side, the “villas” are presumably a major improvement over the village shacks they are intended to replace, assuming they stay up and do not derive most of their value from a property bubble:
At the other end of the scale of uniqueness versus uniformity, this inexplicable and rather precarious looking structure has also been arousing comment of late – it can only be hoped it is built to withstand the “magnitude 0” quakes which cause the collapse of so many Chinese buildings:
Honestly this type of things is scary. I don’t know how anyone could live in them
As much as these dwellings resemble a fucking POW camp, I’m sure they’re a MASSIVE step up from the rural shacks that migrant factory workers came from.
For the first time in their lives, their shit goes into a toilet and sewer instead of a stinky hole in the ground.
Their water supply is sanitized and comes out of a faucet instead of a greenish-colored pond that serves as a dumping ground for some factory.
Holy fuck, those yellow fucks will never fail to surprise me with their stupidity.
This is going to be news when it explodes, soon I would assume.
Laugh…
You just know what can be proved to you.
Those farmers were lived in old, wooden houses like this kind:http://www.gog.com.cn/pic/0/10/53/47/10534703_937744.jpg
Now, they change those house and its land to the buildings show in the news above, with furniture preplaced. They can also get other room frontage on streets, which can be open for small shop or just loan it.
this is the news about those buildings:
http://cd.focus.cn/news/2013-01-22/2788898.html
I guess all the sewage from the houses just drop straight into the ‘river’ under the building.
So let me get this straight.
These are HOUSES. Built on BRIDGES. Which have ONE TO TWO support columns DIRECTLY in the middle of said bridge.
And these are even considered safe in the slightest? All it takes is a minor wind to literally blow down any of these.
Absolutely horrible planning. And no, they won’t stand up to an earthquake. At all.
Just imagine, if they are in danger of exploding due to some defect they should explode simultaneously. China will reach the moon.
Oh, which house was mine again? Oh well… 1..2..3..4..
I guess it doesn’t rain in China since they didn’t build anything to direct the rain water away from the balcony.
you didn`t get it. it`s not a balcony, it`s the pool!
Concentration camp for affluent citizens?
whoa, it looks like some weird military barracks…
gl finding your house LOL
I dunno why but I wanna tip one over and see if it causes a domino effect…
I sure hope no one reading this article looks at that one building funny, because I’m pretty sure that’s all it will take for it to fall down… China quality, indeed…
As for the new suburb, talk about soul-stealing conformity… Who planned that out…the Borg?
disturbingly awesome
Getting home drunk after a night out will be fun.
…house on a bridge? hope the bridge isn’t made of garbage.
I hope they didn’t hook up the gas lines to the dishwashers again, also never seen concrete rust before.
FUCK THEM CHINESE HOPE IT EXPLODE OR WASH AWAY BY A TSUNAMI AND FALL LIKE A DOMINOES. SHIT DESIGN.
That was a random burst of rage. Did your white peers pick on you for liking tentacle porn and lolicon or something?
Chill dude! Lay of the sugar or twinkies!
My god!!! I can’t even imagine the explosive chain that would happen if any of those houses exploded.
From a distance, this looks like Arizona.
someone got to excited about copy/paste.
With so many monopoly houses, how many hotels can I build on that site?
See “Doctor Who: Memory Lane.” Also, is that single support column made of Styrofoam too?
This happens when there are too many ppl!
All in all, this isn’t really too different from american suburbs. A lot closer together, sure, but go around and see how many houses in a common development are similar to each other if not all the same.
And that’s just the single-family units.
Let’s not get into the rows and rows of townhomes that’re bunched next to each other.
Dear china: put solar panels on those fuckers. Seriously.
I was thinking that too.
they assume this is art… but doesnt work out well
looks like the suburbs from 1950s America
They look surprisingly habitable actually. I bet the Chinese families that can actually afford a house are going to love them, that’s right all 3 of them.
oh great. easier to detonate and entire community that way.
Are those balconies for shitting from?
Have you ever been to a modern American suburb? They all look the same out side and inside. The only difference is that fake window shatter is some time blue or red.
What part of America? Because that sure as hell doesn’t sound like any suburb I’ve been through. Seriously, would it kill city planners to design streets that straight?
Reminds me of the eerie feeling from the way suburban houses were built in the 50’s.
China is due for a housing bubble burst so big it makes the US bubble that caused the great recession look like childs play
I wonder how long these houses can stay up…
I think this is actually pretty cool. Must be heaven for customization enthusiasts.
Artefact has probably never seen eastern Berlin… This kind of uniform architecture is hardly something new and was done in europe often enough
Depressing in its uniformity…like the future residents.
we need the towers from dredd
—>Land bombs here<—
>talking about bombing a country whose things are known to explode on their own
Actually I drive past Mississauga every day and see rows of identical houses just like this, although not sprawling as far as the eye can see. It’s not just limited to China, housing companies just want to cut costs in real estate development. I wouldn’t be surprised that in 10 years well be seeing gigantic hab blocks similar to ant-hills. I can only hope that they incorporate some gothic architecture into it so that we can move even closer to the world envisioned in a Philip K Dick novel.
At least when the Levi houses were built in America they put SOME uniqueness into them. this is just Communist bland crap.
and that building over a “river” forget about the magnitude 0 quakes, I’d be more worried about a simple flash flood.
Even cookie cutter Mc Mansions and mobile homes have far more variability then what I see in this housing project.
Both are probably also much nicer and safer to live in.
But then Chinese communist era architecture is generally very bland and unimaginative.
would they explode in a domino effect if one caught on fire
Reminds me of Microsoft’s “Age of Empires” games. I used to always do my housing this way.
On a side note I’m surprised the waterway looks so totally clean.
Oh god, that game is the love of my life. I remember building tons of stables side by side and spawning legions of elephants. In AoE II, the same was done with siege workshops and rapenagers in DM games.
totally in agreement, ah, the good old days of AoE, now I want to play it just to recreate those pictures lol
This is what happens when SanCom doesn’t find anything bad to write about China.
Look like the housing projects in Malaysia…
LMAO, good like finding your home when your half drunk in that ghetto.
It looks just like the american army base I visited in Germany, every apartment block was completely identical. I remember having to count the number of houses I passed so I wouldn’t get lost going to the shops.
I’m going to guess clinical depression must be a huge issue over there.
They built them like that so they can all collapse like dominos.
Soulless town for soulless people.
Where do you park?
Next to each building, there is some space. Difficult to see how much from these photos.
Painting your new house, now a must do.
I think its kinda cool, It’s like copy and paste in the real world.
“Wrong House Rape”
A man entered to this peaceful suburb at about 20:00 yesterday evening, and entered an apartment. He then preceded to rape several women inside. After he was captured and questioned by authorities. His defense to the charges; The assailant claimed that he thought he was drunk and went home and had sex with his wife several times. We are now waiting to see how long it takes for the charges to be dropped.
1. Ctrl+C
2. Ctrl+V
3. Repeat 2.
Pizza delivery nightmare.
Food delivery and trash pick up are the same service so the time lost looking for the right house made up in the end.
Chinese Food delivery nightmare
“I’m in the house with three visible floors.” XD
my first thought was “CTRL+C, CRTL+VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV….”
Wait, this is real? It isn’t a photoshop?
…Will they execute someone if he decides to paint his house a different color?
Looks like something out of Fallout3 before
the big war. Wonder if the serve NukaCola?
Crazy thing is that town will probably explode before the bombs fall.
I guess the creek is the combination laundry
room and toilet?
I would not mind living there, not so far to the mountains and nobody would have better house than I have.
I’ve heard 80m road exploded in china just yesterday.
I like it.
Most of those houses will end up as an investment for rich Chinese anyway, meaning no one will ever live in them. So who cares for their build quality?
I’m not really bothered by the fact that every house looks the same, but the fact that they made the street too narrow to park a car is a serious crime. Especially when you consider the growing rate of Chinese automotive sales.
That said, China should start looking at housing in America. I think they could learn a lot from looking at older row homes & development communities. Row homes were never fancy either, but the costs of joined housing structures should certianly be better than what those clowns came up with.
Wait do you think Americans invented row homes (terraced houses)?
1/10 replied
troll harder next time, douche
That’s what I call social equality. : P
Looks like an incredibly BORING place to live.
You get this crushing feeling of despair just from look at it.
looks just like toronto!
In communist dystopian china, houses haunt you.
they could have easily went ahead and created the futurisitc city of amazingly tall and wide buildings
It’s like those building were crapped out by an extruder.
Seriously living in a crappy village shack seems vastly better then living in this complex that looks like a where house for people.
At least there you’d have some sort of sense of community.
WAREHOUSE. Seriously, it’s not hard.
Wow. Someone actually managed to come up with something that has more copy paste elements than old FF14.
LAWL
All FF 1-6 had massive amounts of copypaste.
That is to say:
*FF’s 1-6
You still did it wrong.
The best part about this comment is that the Chinese made that too. 🙂
Welcome to China Suburbs the model of perfection
(Doesn’t include perfectly trimmed gardens or a bespectacled lawn-gnome to protect the garden)
@ Anon 10:44:
“Yeah, we’re rockin’ the suburbs,
Around the block just one more time,
Yeah, we’re rockin’ the suburbs,
‘Cause I can’t tell which house is mine …”
They just need to paste in the people who will be “living” there
Looks like typical new American suburbia development, actually.
Typical in US? No. But has it happened before? Definitely. This kind of copy pasta can be seen here in the UK. Terraced houses lined up on a straight street uniformerly. We still get them now and again.
Simple search of google isn’t that hard. But y’know…ripping on another is more fun than picking out our own flaws looking at some commenters here.
Not your typical modern American suburb, but the first thing I thought when I saw some pictures was our 1950’s suburbs. Take a trip to San Francisco, you guys. I am disturbed whenever I see those rolling hills of identical, pastel colored dwellings off of Highway 280.
You could also watch Edward Scissor Hands to get the idea.
08:49
clearly you’ve never been to one then.
*fell=feel lol. Although fell isn’t completely wrong either.
People here really need to pay attention to their own individual societies issues before they start tearing down others to make their tiny little insignificant lives fell superior.
No, we get bigger yards.
you fail sir
Foreigner: And where do you live, Mr. Chinaman ?
Mr. Chinaman: White house, blue roof. You can’t miss it.
Looks like a prison camp.
Looks like my Sim City…
It almost looks like mine, except there’s no industrial zoning in the center.
It’s cheaper to relocate the population this way for them. If they had less people, they would have designed things differently.
>no space for parking
>roadway too narrow for moving truck
>cheaper to relocate
what?
You should see how do things here in Mexico, just search pictures of Infonavit or Amontonavit in google…
GM products are big in China, as are german luxury vehicles; however most people still have and use electric bikes for getting around. The only place that I can think of where they’re not common is Shenzhen (and that’s because they’ve been banned there). Other than that you still see bikes everywhere.
“they ride electric bikes”
>he thinks China is like Amsterdam
nigga u dumb. China is importing GM cars&trucks at a staggering rate, to the point that they’ve become China’s number one import. and prices of pump gas are on the rise globally because of that. Electric bikes. TFF
Scratch electric lol, too expensive
Working for happiness is promoted 😛
They have no cars. Unlike Gas guzzling Americans, they ride electric bikes
Is it a POW camp?
Building houses boosts the GDP, even if there are no buyers who can afford them.
all it need is the smog and call it Silent Hill.
Lol I hate to be the postman in this area…. o_0
True it does and the China building bubble will burst one of these days and it’ll be spectacular.
Hopefully the people will still know how to make a living like they did two decades ago by farming and stuff for them selves when it happens and the land will still be arable.
I live in china and I can say that many farmers now became owners of a 8 store bulding with small apartments that goverment exchange for their soils to build up roads and other stuff, maybe like that on the picture… must propably it’s a must for the peasant to yield the goverment authority, otherwise they can just take the peasant down. I start to realize that the situation for many ppl of the countryside is not that bad as many think. But the goverment is messing a lot doing prospections and building up crazy new areas all around.
All the pure economists are predicting American style housing bubble burst. All the sociologists and city planners think the opposite.
It’ll probably turn out to be something in between, a downturn in market price not big enough to qualify as a crash.
The difference is Americans built more houses then there are people to live in them. This wasn’t the case in China.
How high is the possibility that someone who is highly unable to spell ‘mortgage’ correctly has any relevant knowledge of property business?
The number of houses available relative to the number of people living in China is totally irrelevant. Incomes are very low in China, and people with very low incomes don’t buy houses.
Bubble burst wan’t a problem made by people taking on martages they couldn’t afford so don’t try to blame the people…
The housing bubble here is due to people taking on mortgages they couldn’t afford. The individual saving to debt ratio in china is completely different.
Incorrect the US bubble was over valued real estate vs a market glut.
Doesn’t China have cities with no one living in them?
Naw, it’s more like people kept on getting loans for houses they can barely afford the monthly payment. And when the prices started to go down to where the mortgage was more than the value of the house, most people just walked out and stopped paying. >.>
I thought the last big crisis which we are still recovering from was partly because of the american housing bubble bursting….
^ Very unlikely lol
My guess is those broke yellow niggas come pouring into the west.
Ironic isn’t it? The yellow niggas pouring into the West just as the White niggas poured into the rest of the world couple hundred years ago while raping, killing, enslaving, stealing while forcing religion and drugs upon a myriad of cultures for greed.
Seriously…White powah people and racists are one of the most hypocritical and ignorant fools out there. I’m White myself.
SBS Dateline(Australian TV) did a story about these ghost towns being built to inflate GDP.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPILhiTJv7E&feature=player_embedded
so do natural disasters…
One house fire and there goes the neighborhood.
With these buildings being so close to each other, one explosion could cause all of them to explode!
If it catches fire the best thing to do would be to evacuate and let it burn it’s self out.
Hell yeah, Chinese exploding domino.
Death The Kid is amused with this.
Who can be so stupid and come up with the idea to build all buildings exactly the same one after the other?
But then, looking at the bridge with the building on top of it, says it all: This has been designed by a complete retard who just doesn’t give a shit.
A little large-scale thinking and planing goes a long way. Just a little more varied placement of those buildings with some space, grass and trees could have actually make it look somewhat decent but like that it just looks like a giant antfarm that will be inhabited my mindless little identical drones.
This is actually quite fitting for China, come to think of it.
The only thing left to do is wait until it explodes…
@PirateKing
Issuing stereotypes and derogatory statements to solely target a nationality is a kin to being racist. As other pointed out, tract housing is hardly isolated to China but still practiced globally. Yet specifically when China participates in tract housing suddenly it is an outrage, “designed by a complete retard” housing to be filled by Chinese who “will be inhabited them like “ mindless little identical drones.” Then muse it would explode and how it’s all fitting for China.
Clearly hostility is not directed at the housing but China/Chinese. Just because you have friends whos Chinese doesnt really recant a racist comment said. Even KKK members who are secretly descendants of African American, can be just as hateful.
I know right? Damn america stop it with those suburbs.
@PirateKing
Other than the racist comments I agree with a building placed on top of a bridge isn’t that smart or stable.
Building the same building over and over may seem boring but it’s also efficient. For every new design it will cost more money/time for planning and materials. I guess you get what you pay for.
Racist comment? What racist comment?
A few of my friends *are* chinese and they say the exact same thing.
Don’t you see the parallels to the Foxconn factories where hundredthousands of people are slaving away like drones doing repetitive mindless tasks so some idiots can drool over their iphone and whatnot?
If these kinds of things are not being critisized then they will never change.
@PirateKing You realized those examples you listed earlier on are non sequitur and have logical fallacies? That a person can still make a racist comment and still be associated what they hate on.
@PirateKing

@Pyrolight
All-in-all, he wasn’t being racist, he just made the wrong use for a defense.
1. Dude, I spend alot of time in China with 3 chinese friends running an import/export business. And when I say that something in a country is crap then that does not make me racist. Especially when I’m half asian myself (no I won’t tell you from where), so fuck you.
2. No its not limited to china, but doing it that repetitive and with those numbers is another story entirely. The buildings don’t look *that* cheap so its even more stupid to devalue them by this.
3. It still sucks, one of my (yes) chinese friends worked at foxconn in Shenzhen and the things he described to me are unbelievable. But since you don’t know what you’re talking about why don’t you just stfu :-).
1. Lol the “my friends defense”. Face it you are being racist.
2. It is called tract housing. It is hardly (even to that degree) limited to China.
3. You last point is not remotely the same thing. Hell it points as much to western greed and Chinese greed.
Yeah, it’s the mecca of mass production. It’s very fitting for the modern China. Their rich history is burning in the fires of industrialization.
It seems the Chinese are selling off their culture, environment, and future for some quick money today.
This apartment complex will be a crime ridden cesspool 20 years from now if it doesn’t burn or fall down first.
This is nothing like the Walled City.
It is Kowloon Walled City… and not just Kowloon which is the entire peninsular.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kowloon_Walled_City
Welcome to the next Kowloon.
That’s what happen when you have to put a roof over 1 billion people. However i’m a bit curious, are they using proper cement and bricks or just a heap of rubbish, literally.
These are not in high density rise building means that they are for the people that can actually afford their own house.
Conformal house for conformal people…
If the building on top of the bridge collapses, or rather explodes once they let the river flow, that one’s a unique boat house.
The relocated will then be truly relocated, in isolation within the camp.
china is preparing experimentation site
Nuke Town 3.
Last picture, guy washing his clothes in the water and collecting some of the oil from fecal matter to use in the kitchen at that diner inn as well to make it save some money.
