Brave Train Driver Proves China’s Trains “Best in the World”

China’s high speed rail network is the best in the world, with trains capable of safely driving themselves – or so it is hoped, after one shocked Chinese passenger discovered the driver was asleep at the wheel, whilst the train hurtled through the night at 195kph.
The train was en route to Fujian province when a 25-year-old female passenger noticed the driver had left the door to his cabin open as his air conditioning was broken.
To her horror she realised he was sound asleep, and so she naturally took photos of him and uploaded them to a Chinese not-Twitter service.
Coming only a few months after 240 people were killed in a high speed rail accident the government literally attempted to bury, an uproar soon ensued – although not without some wag observing that “this brave driver has proven beyond doubt that China’s high speed rail technology is the best in the world!”

They'd be better off with the "Johnny Cab" driver from "Total Recall"
Or to keep it anime-related, Taxi Driver from Canaan?
"...the driver had left the door to his cabin open as his air conditioning was broken. "
"China’s high speed rail technology is the best in the world!”
Oh the funny irony.
Plus the control looks like it's from a old sci-fi TV show and there's so many red buttons.... go figure....
Red button = Explode!
No, you fool, that's the skull button! The red button is "Fire the nukes". Henchmen these days...
It will blow up without a button anyway
I bet half of the buttons are just broken...
Ejection seat button? So he can Kamikaze with the other train...Head-on!
I guess there is no "Dead Man's switch" to stop the train...
How about China develop a AI system that drives the train by themselves... by activating the red button, that is!
These trains do drive themselves dumbass. The conductor is only there to keep things in check.
Yes he checked the seat if it was comfortable enough to sleep in it.
Hey dumbass, he's not keep shit in check when he's asleep.
Advice. Advise is providing advice, it's a verb.
@ 22:09
Thanks for the advise, you fat assed hog tied mongtard!
This is undoubtly self destruct buttons, you know like those trains in resident evil
Well jokes aside, I'm not sure the trains are the best overall. But they are the fastest to date.
Whether they're safe or sturdy...well I wouldn't hold my breathe. But I'll hold off generalizations for the time being. Unlike some typical racit dipshits.
In case of emergency, wake up driver.
Or assassinate the driver drive the train.
That would be manslaughter and even in China you would get to jail or worse the death penalty.
Chinese justice is actually more severe* than the rest of the world.
*Does not apply to rich people.
Yeah, as the story said the door is open due to the broken air conditioning.
i don't know about chinese trains, but french TGV and i believe japanese shinkansen have a system that checks the driver's awakeness every few seconds ...
pretty basic and useful :p
Its called a dead man's switch. Its a lever the a train operator needs to engage continually otherwise it would stop the train. Its design to be always pressed/stepped on, so if a driver falls asleep his muscle would relax and the dead man switch pushes up in effect stopping the train.
Its a technological design that has been incorporated in every train since the 1920s.
Not in this case, obviously.
@Godot
Thank you for that information. I honestly am grateful for learning something I otherwise would never have thought of. Hearing about simple, elegant, and practical innovations like that really make me feel pride in human creation again for a moment.
I know it's simple, but still... taking a moment to recognize what simple designs like that do in terms of protecting and enhancing humanity is just something I need to hear once in a while to feel better about where we are as a species. Regardless of if some of our species doesn't end up using it...
You mean the Chinese cloned those high speed trains, but not the Deadman's switch?
Why waste money putting such safety measures? Besides, if accidents do happen and their citizens get killed, it's essentially a population control method now.
No, just no. Toyota messed up I must admit but they recall and correct the problem. I cant say the same for china companies and government to bury people alive. ┐('~`;)┌
They got the idea from Toyota.
YOU NO GET BREAK! yOU NO GET STEERING WHEEL! yOUR CAR GO BOOM IN GARAGE, KAMBOOM KADAAN!
and it's not only about just keeping the switch pressed, it it remains pressed for too long, the train also stops (in the tgv at least) :D
so you must show signs of activity
For those who dont know-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_man's_switch
If the driver was indeed sleeping then it means that these chinese trains does not have a working "dead man's switch". Train wreck waiting to happen.
@23:28
"and it's not only about just keeping the switch pressed, it it remains pressed for too long, the train also stops (in the tgv at least) :D

reading comprehension - a useful ability!
It can also mean that the driver has access to a reasonably heavy stone.
Exactly. I know we have damn thing in every train in Europe, from newest high-speed trains, to old, soviet behemoths from 50'ties.
What the fuck were Chinese thinking when they forgot about it?
Not so obviously... this is not a problem for a well-placed brick (w/o relaxing muscles), is it?
DERP. A deadman's switch is very easy to tie off/weigh down, etc. If you ACTUALLY knew anything about high-speed systems, you'd know that they all use a positive-feedback switch or sensor: An alarm or keypress/sequence that needs to be input/responded to at regular intervals, to PROVE there is a human being responding to the input.
The stupidity of humans dealing with 10,000-ton trains and ease of circumventing simple '1920's' safety is about the only real thing in the recent train disaster movie 'Unstoppable'.
he probably jammed it
How do you even know he's asleep from the back of his head?
"How do you even know he's asleep from the back of his head?"
Yeah, looks like it could have been Steven Hawking driving.
About french TGV dead man switch, You need to press (and release) a switch every 30 seconds. if you don't do it, strong noisy alarm ring if you do not press the button then the train stop. Obviously they keep record of every alarm
How does that work?
Maybe a small electrical shock now and then to keep them awake.
China doesn't really know "small" though, so if they use that it would be a huge electrical shock that would hit everyone inside the train.
they had one. but it exploded...
He might have laid a brick on it or jammed it with somethin' ya know.
@21:43

Probably the control panel wouldn't work anyway if shit happened.
After all, it's Chine quality we are talking about.
The panels would have a good chance of exploding I'm sure.
The hardware is high class (explosive) while the software is not (driver).
That driver wouldn't even classify as software, maybe malware.
Well in most cases everyone in china is a waste of space.
@ 6:13. What about the fact that the driver is human and therefore made up of squishy bits? Would that classify him as software?
Explosive kickbacks should slow the train down enough.
