An interview with the producer for the Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy collection reveals that the countries that are getting new localizations of the games aren’t localizing it to the country’s culture like the English and French translations.
Ace Attorney remains one of the most famous examples of localization in video game history, with an Americanized setting created by a localizer, with the game taking place in a “Japanifornia” version of Los Angeles – while the French translation has the setting changed to Paris, in spite of more and more Japanese elements showing up as the series went on, showing the pitfalls of such localization techniques.
According to the producer, such localizations (rather than straight translation) were needed at the time, as the team felt that Japanese culture wasn’t as well-known or prevalent in the target countries. That said, such localizations helped make ‘Phoenix Wright’ popular, so he praised the localization team for their work.
However, now that Japanese culture is more familiar with the Apollo Justice Trilogy, the team in charge of the collection has worked closely with translators to add new Asian language support with newly recorded voices without fully localizing the setting of the game. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on the person), the English versions that are already localized will remain the same.
The collection will be an entire remake of the game on RE Engine (not MT Framework as used by Capcom before) and is their first adventure/visual novel game on the engine. When asked if the RE Engine will be home to future Ace Attorney games, the producer said that while there was nothing to announce at this time, the Ace Attorney series is not going to stop here.
total localizer death, good.
So I can continue to ignore these pieces of s♥♥t games lmao. If you’re not going to fix the fucking English version, f♥♥k off.
You shouldn’t be playing English versions of Japanese games in the first place.
He’s right. Quit fucking giving them your money your brain dead retards. Emulation and piracy exists.
Learn to sail the seven seas and never look back. Otherwise quit bitching about the wokeness and greed that you gamers have enabled.
You shouldn’t talk about japanese games in English language websites in first place 🙃
unfortunately not everyone has brain/memory to learn japanese
i would also loved if i had the brain for it
The whole learn japanese is not a good solution. The source is being censored and we know by now that they do quiet censorship behind the scenes. Wokeness has been infesting Japan for years already.
@StillAnonymous
They probably learned English at a young age where it is easier to learn new languages. Plus English is one of the easiest language to learn while Japanese is one of the hardest (that people care about).
That’s just an excuse. You learned English.
Can we please get this for all japanese media translated? There is no need for localization at all, there never was!
Depends, in some rare cases it may be necessary to maybe not exactly localize as in completely change but at least make something easy to understand for “the west”. For example Persona 5 case which is funny for other reason. Suddenly in school you are asked about Shougi which is basically “Japanese Chess” but not all the world knows about it, let alone its mechanics. So as part of “localization” I would make for example answer options for the question obvious for “the west” to discern which one is correct even if they won’t know why.
Other than such rare cases I fully agree with you. Phoenix Wright series takes place in Japan so it’s okay to leave things as they are as in Onigiri, Ramen and all that. There is no need to artificially make it into “BURGERS” for the sake of digging their own grave as proven with later releases… Second game had a place which was basically SCREAMING with “Japanese culture here!” and it was still about their residents going for burgers… WHY?!
Localisation as a whole is a waste of time and money. Just hire a Japanese translator and include these language options in the original version of the game.
Good to see this is catching on and isn’t just a trend.
To hell with wokalizers
“wokalizers” 🤓🤓🤓
