City Hunter & Boku no Hero Academia Next on Netflix Live-Action Chopping Block

Not content with ruining fans’ memories of Cowboy Bebop and Resident Evil, Netflix has not only reiterated that they have a live action adaptation in the works for Boku no Hero Academia, but one for the beloved City Hunter as well.

The Boku no Hero Academia live-action film will follow the plot of the manga, and is being directed by Alice in Borderland director Shinsuke Sato. The movie will hit cinemas in Japan as well, courtesy of Toho Films. Netflix describes the series as being set in a world full of superpowers as nearly everyone holds a power known as a “quirk”:

In the world of My Hero Academia, almost everyone has a “quirk” — a superpower that marks them for a heroic future. That future just got a little brighter, with the news that the hit manga is getting a live-action adaptation from Netflix and Legendary Entertainment. Screenwriter Joby Harold (Army of the Dead, Obi-Wan Kenobi) is working on the script; Shinsuke Sato (Alice in Borderland) will direct. No word yet on what their quirks might be.

My Hero Academia follows Izuku Midoriya (AKA Deku), a young high school student with an unfortunate flaw: Unlike 80% of the world’s population, he has no quirk. In a world of superpowered schools and larger-than-life heroes, it’s a death sentence for his social life. But when Izuku has a chance encounter with top-ranked hero All Might, he might just have a shot at achieving his greatest dream: a spot at the prestigious U.A. Academy.

City Hunter is no stranger to live action adaptations as Jackie Chan starred as Ryo Saeba in the Hong Kong film adaptation in 1993; while in 2011 it was adapted into a South Korean TV series. Finally, 2018’s Nicky Larson et le parfum de Cupidon was a French adaptation using localized names. This means that this is the first live-action adaptation to actually be shot in Japan.

There’s some hope yet for Netflix’s adaptation, as the company is only producing and distributing it, while HoriPro and Office Shirous are in charge of filmmaking with a full Japanese cast and staff.

Ryouhei Suzuki stars as Ryo Saeba, sporting a longcoat that is closer to the manga version of City Hunter compared to the anime version’s jacket outfit:

Boku no Hero Academia’s live action film is “coming soon”, while no release date has been given for City Hunter.
