A recurring urinary problem afflicting a man living in China had him going to a doctor to learn that he is actually intersex and has been menstruating for 20 years, a shocking development that will have many wondering how this wasn’t discovered sooner.
The 33-year-old Chen Li (who has now altered his name) of the Sichuan province was informed by doctors that, despite having a penis and testicles, he was born with female sex chromosomes and also has a uterus and ovaries.
Suffering from blood in his urine for two decades whilst also being stricken with abdominal agony every month, Chen was appalled after learning he also had female reproductive parts, and subsequently had them removed.
Bewildering doctors who couldn’t pinpoint an exact cause for Chen’s bloody urine and abdominal pain that had been recurring since adolescence, they initially believed it was appendicitis, but Chen’s issues persisted after being treated.
A medical checkup last year at long last uncovered the source of Chen’s problems, that being he was actually intersex and had female reproductive organs, and his bloody urine was from his menstruation.
Chen had the dysfunctional female organs removed through surgery, but his surgeon noted that he will sadly never have children as his testicles weren’t producing sperm.
Guidelines from the United Nations describe intersex individuals as those who “do not fit the typical definitions for male or female bodies”.

Just to be clear, there has never been born a person with 2 fully functional sex organs, so freely picking gender has never been an option for anyone, intersex is the rare condition of them not having a fully functional set of either, so it is less clear what they should be at birth.
More concerning is the waste majority of those that “swap gender” these days, as they do it just because it’s trendy. If they had been born 20 years earlier they would have been the emo kids, and 20 years before that the hippies. The definition of intersex has shifted decade by decade, also the name of the condition has been changing over time. You could be a hermaphrodite at some point in time and have a working set of male genitials.
