China Planning to Ban Karaoke Songs Containing “Illegal Content”

China is once again relentless in its endeavor to purge freedom from citizens as it is said the communist country is looking to ban songs from karaoke venues that possess “illegal content”, such as ones that “harm national honor” or “propagate obscenity”.

The country’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism declared this impending banning spree, with songs that “endanger national unity, sovereignty or territorial integrity” being applicable to this censorship – more examples of content that will lead to a song being banned:

– Incite ethnic hatred and ethnic discrimination
– Endanger national security or harm national honour and interests
– Violate the state’s religious policies
– Propagate obscenity, gambling, violence and other criminal activities

The ministry cited that venue operators were having trouble combing through songs as some had collections exceeding 100,000 in total, and for this reason, those who create and distribute such songs to karaoke venues were encouraged to be diligent in weeding out “problematic” songs.

China pursued similar musical censorship back in 2015 where they blacklisted 120 songs that “trumpeted obscenity, violence, crime or harmed social morality”, with “Beijing Hooligans”, “Suicide Diary”, and “Don’t want to go to school” being only a few examples.

A song titled “Fart” was also amongst those denied existence, containing lyrics such as “There are some people in the world who like farting while doing nothing”.

Rules regarding music no longer permitted for karaoke will be implemented October 1st.
