Square Enix has tried to instill more anticipation for the remake of their “magnum opus” RPG Final Fantasy VII by revealing the box art for the North American and European versions, as well as posting a number of screenshots that included hints about the materia system.
Both Europe and North America will receive box art based on the American box art for the original Final Fantasy VII – the cover, which was apparently revealed a short while ago:

This may cause some distress to European gamers, who are accustomed to the Japanese-style box art for Final Fantasy games:
Screenshots were also released, including one that reveals some information about how materia works. The classic system of putting materia into slots on weapons and armor and using linked slots to add extra effects will remain, as will the system of leveling the materia up with AP.
There is some change in the function of the Elemental materia; while its effects when applied to armor will remain the same, its effects when applied to weapons will now become stronger as its level increases:

If the background’s lighting level is like that, I take back my words: that setting is proper Midgar (I’m the one who previously complained that the BGs are too damned bright).
The new cover is just a shittier copy of the old one. The dramatic angle in the old one makes the building look large, looming, and intimidating while Cloud stares up at it defiantly. In the old one, his left hand showing makes the image look more dynamic, and it makes Cloud look like he is ready to fight.
In the new one, it looks like he is just randomly walking down a street while carrying a sword in the most awkward way possible. The image doesn’t convey any of what the old one did or even anything new and meaningful.
