What I simply do not fucking understand... is how people can NOT bash Lucky Star, but then bash K-On!

K-On is about development of friendships, and other interpersonal affairs. If you're watching this show for any kind of well-defined (explicit) plot, then you're of course not going to find shit. That's where you either become an idiot and say you don't see anything, and there's nothing going on (save moe moe), or you tell Watson to keep digging. If you tell Watson to keep digging, you'll pretty much find that this show's premise is the very equivalent of many shoujo mangas... except in a shounen way.

I think what they did with the show was brilliant. Basically, they took the friendship/character development themes of generic shoujo mangas, and then mixed with with characters that look like moe shounen girls. Then they shounenized the shoujo relationships slightly, which effectively increases the "moe output". Now, most people can't really explain why the hell they watch this show, so they just say it's because "Mio is fucking awesome," or something of the sort.... but there's really more to this show. Granted, shounenized shoujo definitely ain't as deep as either shoujo or shounen (though shounen was never very deep, and shounen series are becoming more and more generic as we speak...). Of course some plot just isn't thrown in your face. That's when you realize that there's more going on... or you remain ignorant. Take your pick.

Now, if I were to REALLY take a show that had absofuckinglutely nothing going on... that'd be Lucky Star. Holy crap, I don't even know how I got as far as I did in it. All it was was fanservice. That's it. There was no plot, hardly any relationship development. Hell, there was nothing. It was just an eclair with no filling.

Suppose relationship development is one of the things we aren't looking for in a slice-of-life comedy anime?

    07:37 22/10/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

What you're looking for doesn't fucking matter. Point is it has nothing... except fanservice. I wouldn't call a bunch of girls that do nothing but interact (randomly, without internal factors) a slice of life anime anyway. That's a slice of bullshit. Comedy, maybe. I just never found it funny.

That's not even the original point. The point was that K-On! actually has something there... but people are dissing it. Lucky Star has pretty much nothing but lolis and comedy.

Then again, what can I expect from the Sankaku crowd? ROOOORICOOON. >_>

You're arguing K-On! has substance? What a misguided one you are. Oh, and the word you're fishing for, about Lucky Star, is "episodical."

    16:33 22/10/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

I'm arguing that it has substance. However, it doesn't take much to "argue" (if you can really call it that) against you, since you don't provide any reasoning beyond one line of opinion on how you like to think that everyone that doesn't agree with you is just wrong. Goferit.

Also, thanks for your little vocab lesson, but I don't much give a shit what you call it; giving something a new label doesn't change what it is.

This whole shebang of just railing on everything that gets popular is something that's not really that uncommon. Like take Halo. If you didn't like it, it's obviously overrated. Omagad.

    Good point.

Perhaps those who readily bash K-On! cannot see anything there because they have no experience at all with real life, real friends or real highschool life?

Much less experience with forming a band with friends...

I think it's mostly frustration that people think their personal favorites are under-recognized and then there is this show that seems totally unimpressive getting more attention than it deserves.

As far as I'm concerned, the comedy was okay, the plot was okay, the animation was kinda weak, I didn't care for the character design, and the characters themselves were mindless moe archetypes without any depth to them.

Now none of this stuff is particularly terrible, and the show was still rather entertaining and it was one of the few shows I never let sit around for days before getting around to watching a new episode.

To draw a parallel to another anime, imagine if Clannad removed all the backstory to the characters, removed Nagissa's parents, and concluded after the completion of all characters' story arcs without any kind of resolution to who Tomoya is really interested in. The result would still be an entertaining show, but it would go from an amazing show to something on the better end of the average spectrum. Now imagine its popularity tripled after being severely gutted...

And for the record K-On > Lucky Star. LS made me laugh a lot harder than anything from K-On when it was good, but far to many episodes failed to even make me smile from amusement.

i think the terms "overrated" and "underrated" only work when people rate something much too early without even bothering to investigate. whenever a person has experienced something and then makes his/her own comments based on that, any comment is legal and valid.

i pretty much think otherwise. i surely think this k-on is severely underrated. before watching i saw sooo many people bashing the so-called "nothingness" of k-on. then i checked this out to find out just how bad it is. after watching, i was confused. i couldn't find anything wrong with this thing

more than 70% of all animes out there are crappier than this. so why exactly people hate k-on extremely as though as it is the worst show ever? i'm sure, i'm pretty sure, it is simply because k-on is popular.

Not even slightly... they'd be completely legal in England, which is what makes 'lolis' like Taiga, Azusa and Koromo all the more awesome.

Shakugan no Shana's Shana, on the other hand, IS a loli. In the books she's stated as about 12 years old. She steals the essence of a schoolgirl and takes her place, rather than being high-school age herself.

Which makes her the most awesome loli ever... rivalled only by Rika in Higurashi.
