Final Fantasy VIII, the eighth main installment in the Final Fantasy series, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month, and the original director, Yoshinori Kitase, shared thoughts on a possible remake.
Speaking in an interview, Kitase talked about reworking the battle system of Final Fantasy VIII if he were to do a remake, as players struggled with the stat-heavy Junction system in the original RPG:
“I think you may remember we had the Junction system in Final Fantasy VIII,” he said. “And the thing about that system was the enemies leveled up in line with what the player’s level was. And obviously, you had to then use the Junction system and how you customize that to overcome the challenge there. And I think it was a very difficult system for some people to get into. Depending on player skills, sometimes they just didn’t work out the best way of doing it.
So I think I’d want to return to that and really rework the battle system on [Final Fantasy VIII] and make it something where that level of difficulty and approachability for some fans was a lot better balanced. So I think that’s the thing I’d look at most if I was going to look at remaking it.”
However, the director also talked about how a remake of Final Fantasy VIII was unlikely:
“I’ve worked out that trying to recreate that kind of volume of content you had in the RPGs back then in the modern day really is not something you can take up lightly. It’s such a massive investment of time and effort that we really have to think very hard about taking on any kind of project like that.”
Final Fantasy VII Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi also chimed in:
“If after we’ve finished the three games in the [Final Fantasy VII] remake trilogy, Mr. Kitase then comes to me and says, ‘Right, we’re going to be remaking another numbered Final Fantasy game, and you are on the project,’ I’ll just turn around and go, ‘No!’”
Final Fantasy VIII was initially released on February 11, 1999.
Of course they would. They would make it mindless button mashing for modern audiences who don’t have 2 braincells to rub together.
You sure like to twist things into the most cynical interpretation possible
That’s because 95% of the time, the most cynical interpretation, is the correct one. Shove your head further up your own ass.
Square isn’t a Japanese company anymore, so they would make everything generic, like all those western games. Their last big hit was Nier Automata, and it was made by a man who loved women being sexualized. And it sure showed that there was support for a nice curvy ass, instead of a fat bloated feminist on screen.
Yeah, they should make more games like Nier Automata, but even sexier and with the camera auto-angling in on the good parts.
Given the sales of Nier Automata, you’d figure that would be pretty obvious. However, they have yet to announce a true sequel.
Now, it looks like a Korean company said “f*ck it, we’ll do it ourselves” and made Stellar Blade. Maybe Squeenix should take a hint and fire all of their feminist too?
They cant exactly do alot, lunatic, their HQ along with sony is still in commiefornia, until we can uproot that company and throw it back to japan where it needs be, after shaking off the diseased leeches, then maybe we could see sht improve for the better, but, thats a very big IF.
Just stop. I hope Square just dies before they ruin anything else with a remake.
I’m sure he would, and it would be as big of a hit as FF 13, 13-2, 13-3, 15, and 16. How does these inbred fuckin morons get these positions?
To be fair, the junction system and enemies leveling with you is something FF8 is almost universally lambasted for. Even plenty of people who like it say those things were poorly handled. I love the game, but pretending like it wouldn’t benefit from some sort of rebalancing is a bit asinine.
Ok…. Let me get this straight, people think that equipping cure or life to hp to get an increase was hard? Not everyone was going to end game places who cares if enemies get stronger if you can use haste and spam GF all day? W-what!? It discourages using spells!? I fucking wonder why the f♥♥k you could refine the most used spell out of all sort of items that everyone fucking drops? Now I see why he wants to change it … Everyone a fucking retard
