Japan Ranks 125th in Global Gender Gap Index 2023 Rankings

The Global Gender Gap Index, which annually benchmarks the “current state and evolution of gender parity,” has ranked Japan 125th out of 146 countries, making it the lowest rank since its inception in 2006.

The Global Gender Gap Index’s scoring is based on four key dimensions: economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment.

Japan scored a 64.7% in the Global Gender Gap Index 2023 rankings, falling from the 116th spot last year to the historic low of 125th. The “politics” index, which evaluates the percentage of women among cabinet ministers and members of the Diet, was 5.7%, enough to rank Japan at 138th out of 146 in the category.

The “education” index, which evaluates the percentage of women going to university, was another factor that brought the score down for Japan.

With the introduction of the LGBT Understanding Bill in Japan, women will face more challenges in the coming years, starting with securing “women-only spaces” for restrooms and bathhouses.
