The Lovable Kirby Has Died

A recent obituary in the New York Times has revealed that Kirby has died – specifically John Kirby, who worked with Nintendo and was the inspiration for the similarly named video game character.

Unfortunately, the lawyer died on the 2nd of October at the age of 79, according to the obituary – it is reported that he succumbed to cancer-related medical complications.

John Kirby served as Nintendo’s defense lawyer when they were sued by Universal Studios for their use of the name “Donkey Kong” in 1984. The film studio took them to court over the perceived similarity between “Donkey Kong” and “King Kong”.

Kirby was successful in his defense of the Japanese company, who rewarded him with a boat worth $30,000 (not adjusted for inflation) and which they christened the “Donkey Kong”.
