PSP dating game “Marriage Royale” has been attracting some not entirely approving attention after it became apparent the 12 characters present in the game are all seem to be identical colour and hair variations of the same face:
The game itself costs some $60.
Many derisively compare this all to Aoi Nishimata’s standard facial design:

I don't particularly mind if they all have the same face, as long as they are all aren't exactly the same personality wise. Then it'd just be annoying and repetitive.
So why does no one complain about T2 or any other artist? Even though the same face issue screams laziness or stagnation, at least it allows us to identify the artist immediately. Whatever happened to Style™?
Yea, having a significant and sorta identical (in other word; consistent) art style is what makes an artist well known with their distinguishable work among others. I mean even Tetsuo Hara (Hokuto no Ken), Sadamoto (NGE & .hack//Sign) and Masami Kurumada (Saint Seiya) also tend to draw some (if not most) of their characters based on one face type. This is what actually makes ppl able to make out who's the artist with a simple glimpse on the picture.
Although the problem with Nishimata is that she uses the exact same palette straightly for her character portraits..
i want a nice cellphone ^_^
Similar =/= Same.
Well some of them look a little difference.
..the girl with the green circle... the only one with a different coloured circle..
the gif pic really shows that its the same really. Just different color and shading.
all these characters look like they have down-syndrome
the fact that it's all mass-produced is the reason why anime can't be seen as an art-form in the west.
Probably as kitsch at worst (Case here), and incomprehensible, pretentious nonsense at best. (Anno's Evangelion, works of Murakami)
Speaking of western kitsch art I recall a US "artist", unfortunately I don't remember his name, from the 50s or 60s, whose signature pieces were expressionless, big-eyed children with several tears trailing from their eyes. There were minor differences between each version but the features were essentially identical. These prints were sold in dime stores as a kind of art-for-the-masses.
A convincing argument might be made, I think, that he predated (and possibly inspired) the current cookie cutter moe blob anime character design.
This might be a suitable topic for an art historian. Suggested title: "Japanese Moe Design Copied from Historic American Bad Art".
I have to make an "X doesn't change facial expressions" YTMND now.
This may be news ... to people who don't watch anime. Why do characters get ridiculous hair colors? It's no secret that it's to help viewers differentiate them.
"Oh, it's that green-hair girl character"
"No no, the purple hair girl did it"
"The twin tail girl is mysterious!"
When I watch Zetsubo Sensei, the girls look so alike that it was impossible to differentiate among them if not for their hairstyles (and of course, the megane).
I don't see how that's any different from series like K-on! or random anime Q.
It's pretty common practice in the bishoujo industry.
A quite delayed insight, don't you think?
OMG!! IT´S ONE GIRL HAREM!!!!
Awesome!!
The picture of the phones does a holy excellent description of the situation.
me wonders how she draws guy faces
Surprise? Hah, try again :)
What the hell are you talking about? ALL manga characters have the same face. The reason they have the goofy ass hair and different colors is so you can tell them apart!
Artefact should point Shigunyan too
A lot of the faces are similar, but not identical. Look at the nun (?) girl with the book. Her eyes are quite narrow and close together, unlike some of the other girls. Now look at the two maid sisters (?) each have very different faces from each other. And yes, the other ones have similar eyes, but different chins, etc. and they all have crazy hair and different outfits, so I don't see a problem, although a bit more variation would be nice. Also, if you play Shuffle! from 2006, the faces are quite different, atleast in the game.
...really. I expected better of you people (when anime is concerned, I mean).
While it's true that you can line up the eyes, nose and mouth to be the same in that video, if look at the top of the head and chin, they are constantly moving. The reason for this is because neither those nor the 12 shown above are actually the same face, it's just that the anime tends not to show the details that distinguish those features clearly, so the artist needs to use the shape of the face and forehead.
btw tony taka's characters look quite distinctive to me.
The 4 R's of an anime artist:
Recycle the faces
Reuse the faces
Reduce your drawing time
Reap the fame and fortune
Just because they're all Asian doesn't mean they all look the same, you racist bastards. :p
Awkward n bored, just gave them various boobs so make it different *wtf* xO
Well, considering you have something like 100-200 eroge every year, and each one has 2-8 girls, its no wonder that they are all done in a "paint by numbers" style.
Quantity over quality, churn enough out and eventually you will get a hit that sells 100,000 copies. Everything else can just fade away into obscurity.
Didn't SanCon already do an article on this? Still doesn't it any less true, though.
I mean, a lot of character designers are guilty of this but some just sticks out more for one reason or another. Others that come to mind at the moment are Tony Taka, Noizi Ito, and Takeuchi Takashi.
This is old; I mean, all the characters from either Sailor Moon or Saint Seiya had the same faces with different hairstyles. That's why some anime needs wierd hair colours.
What's that?
Too busy looking at the silver haired girl in black with a book..
TAKING GENERIC MOE TO NEW LEVEL!!
same guy impregnated all their moms
I fully expected Nishimata Aoi art before even clicking on the link.
I am not disappointed.
The later girls added to the roster of Marriage Royale look worse than the initial ones. Whatever happened to gleaning for the best designs from readers? I guess things just went down the drain after Hiro pulled out.
Heheheh..... pulled out.
splurt
same guy impregnated all their moms.
you mean like in Tick Tack?!?
CALL ON MEEEEEEEEE,
CALL ON ME
It's like eating ice cream with different flavors...
They are n-tuplets.
those characters in yellow and purple circles are designed by suzuhira hiro, not aoi nishimata.
No one said it was by Aoi Nishimata
no one said it was not by aoi nishimate either
I AM AOI NISHIMATE!!!
no, I am aoi nishimata
NO, I AM AOI NISHIMATA!!!
will the real aoi nishimata please stand up
Then why are you getting all defensive?
Can it be considered monogamy then?
That's one way to get your money's worth out of a character design. It's like Transformer Repaints, same mold, different paint scheme, again, and again, and again, and again.
Yea can really be seen through that super fast gif :D
Chara design recycling is common, but that gif gives you a WTF feeling... ^_^
It must save loads of time too...o.o;
Which one's Ultra Magnus?
someone should come up with auto generator, that way you can use it to generate characters. think of the possibilities, unlimited number of characters, quick and easy.
all you need is a set of templates and your done, wait, someone already has done this. キャラクターなんとか機 -> http://khmix.sakura.ne.jp
think of it as an artist that plays many different roles :)
That doesn't seem to bother people when they see Tony Taka's work and other artists like him.
Actually most anime artist seem to draw one type of face. Very few can make many different kind of faces.
I'm your dream, mind astray
I'm your eyes while you're away
I'm your pain while you repay
You know it's sad but true
Anybody wanna rewrite this, or is copypasting the last line enough?
And for that reason Tony Taka is overrated. When you're new it's 'ok', yet in all these years he hasn't matured.
Stuck doing what you feel comfortable with is a sure way to stay merely 'good'.
After masturbating to many of Tony's works, I am obliged to defend him. Seriously though, most anime artists use the same face i'm suprised they are making a fuss about something that has happened for decades.
Same book, different cover. Thats Navel for you.
Except, this has many covers for your harem! ^^
Do you see now where Moe-shit has led us?
Go fuck yourself, faggot
im going to set you on fire
I dont know if its a good idea to compare to Eddie Murphy...
Yo dawg, i put a face in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face, in yo face.
Fags.
There's a difference between keeping consistency in character designs, and laziness...
There is also uncreativity.
Newfag.
/b/tard. Never use word "newfag".
*refers to artwork* same fag.
HOMOSEXUALS
fucking fags
Actually the meme is yo dawg not sup dawg, fail. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xzibit : 6:25 anon failed.
Newfag.
Use "sup dawg" instead.
So... it's actually just one character... Every time you meet her she assumes the disguise of someone else... Talk about split personality
A dating sim where you can fuck the same girl but has a split personality?
Fucking brilliant!
Yes, indeed!
That would actually make for an interesting premise.
Kamen Rider Den-OH..?
All characters have the same face...
... and this is different then 99% of anime how?
You're getting anime confused with asians. Silly boy.
Breast sizes of course
Aoi Nishimata Bashing Thread # 1276596, very much?
Slow news day?
Uhm, so what? The characters in Clannad looked the same too.
they all had different chins
except that clannad had something else than chara-design going for it..
what with it? it's classical animu history xD
call on me... man that song is a huge earworm
always with the same expression
And to comment on this positively, Aoi Nishimata's same face character design is still far better than Tim Buckley's B^U.
I hate this art style.
Otaku who don't give a damn: "Why re-invent the wheel?"
Now for the rest?
Same as every other anime then?
So cheap and unprofessional... He is not a real draftsmen.
ALL WOMEN ARE WH*RES ANYWAY.
Well, how does it feel to be a whore's son?
I dont really see a big problem here...
The main characteristics separating characters both anime or games of such manner is:
1. Hair
2. Clothing
Style, color, accsesories ect...
Like you ever take a good look at the face when all you can see is some wacky stylish haircut cute enoth to appeal to your likings ^^
I'm not good with artist names, those characters look like they were made by the person who drew SHUFFLE! am I right?
Yes, both artists who worked on SHUFFLE!, Nishimata Aoi and Suzuhira Hiro.
She also plans to draw Star Wars Illustrations.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars....
SUPREMELY well-played, sir.
