Kyoto Animation Arsonist: ‘If Only Even Five People Read My Novels…’

Kyoto Animation Arsonist: "If Only Even Five People Read My Novels..."

The Kyoto Animation arsonist trial continues, with the two psychiatrists who diagnosed accused Shinji Aoba testifying as to the man’s mental state. During one of their meetings, the arsonist claimed, “If only even five people read my novels, I wouldn’t have done it.”

The psychiatrists disagreed on whether Aoba did or didn’t have a personality prone to delusions, with one side claiming Aoba had the type of personality that was biased towards having delusions and that Aoba was suffering more from believing too strongly in his own interpretation of reality, but in a regular mental state. The others felt Aoba was surprisingly trusting in their meetings and didn’t show any hint of opposition, so they avoided diagnosing Aoba as such.

However, both agreed that whether or not Aoba was delusional in his motives did not affect his actions in carrying out the crime. According to one of them, during his meetings with the accused, the accused stated that “if even only five people had read his novels, it wouldn’t have turned out like this,” concluding that if Aoba had continued writing, he likely wouldn’t have carried out the arson.

Finally, Aoba was also seen as having a lack of common sense in regard to the internet, believing that he knew much more than he actually did.
