The highly-anticipated English localization of Nukitashi was released on June 23rd, but it wasn’t without its fair share of controversy after users called it out for being full of politics, Western memes, and questionable translations.
Shiravune, the company behind the localization, has been criticized for several points, with the most significant complaints being the use of immersion-breaking slang and replacing Japanese culture with Western cultural elements.
While it’s understandable that not everything is translatable, Nukitashi’s localization had numerous unfaithful or non-literal translations. Users also noted how the localization was seemingly “walking on eggshells” to avoid cultural sensitivities while also making players feel like they were the subject of ridicule (e.g., translating “otaku” as neckbeard, etc.).
Here are a few examples:
「オタク釣ったりとか危ないことしちゃめーでしょ」
““Anyway, no trying to go e-begging to a bunch of neckbeards, all right?””,
While the use of the slang “e-begging” works in the context, translating オタク (otaku) as “neckbeard” is incorrect and could be seen as a potshot by the players.
モブ男D/イクイクセーシ男子】
「イクイクセーシ! イクイクセーシ! イクイクセーシ!」
あまりの猛暑にどうかしてしまったのか、セミになりきったプレイをしている者もいた。
name = {“モブ男D”, “Bazinga Boy”},
““Bazinga! Bazinga! Bazinga!””
“There’s one girl performing the Voice Piece for Soprano, and a boy trying to imitate an American sitcom character.”,
Given how difficult it would be to translate “イクイクセーシ” in this context, any sexual joke as a chant would’ve likely sufficed, but the translators decided to go with the term “Bazinga” made famous by the American sitcom The Big Bang Theory, which had nothing to do with the original line. While it’s difficult to convey the cultural trope of “cicadas in the summer” used to describe something or someone being “loud,” going with “trying to imitate an American sitcom character” would likely still confuse many, and it’s also outdated.
【美岬】「それって……マップチンポじゃないですかっ!」
【淳之介】「マッチポンプだ」
【美岬】「マッチポンプじゃないですかっ!」
“That’s like… cunny capitalism!”
“You mean crony capitalism.”
“That’s like crony capitalism!”
In this example, a character mispronounces the term made-in-Japan English compound “マッチポンプ” (“match-pump”) as “マップチンポ” (“map chinpo”), which is mostly a humorous anagram pun for the use of “チンポ” (“chinpo”) meaning “penis,” but the translator decided to go with the character mistakenly saying “cunny” instead of “crony.” The use of “cunny” was questionable and a reach to try making a Japanese joke work in English.
「そんな当たり前のように蔑称で呼ぶな、育成型野球ゲームじゃないんだから」
““Could you please stop throwing that word around? This isn’t a fake outrage gaming blog.””,
Another example that would be difficult to translate as a character is saying, “Could you stop casually insulting me? This isn’t a baseball simulation game,” which is an obscure reference to a mobile baseball game. Using a “fake outrage gaming blog” was certainly an odd choice.
More examples of unrelated jokes about politics and other unfaithful translations:
Without delving into too many details, Shiravune continuously translated the word “lolicon” as “pedophile,” with no regard to potential nuance or sarcasm due to a seemingly personal bias by the translator, Ittaku.
Examples of “lolicon” being translated as “pedophile”:
Lastly, an issue that wasn’t so much about the game itself but several out-of-context screenshots of the localization team “bragging” about their work wasn’t taken too kindly:
Most of this is the usual localisation shite, but the most telling bit is the Discord messages, where these clowns openly admit to add jokes to their work. These cretins are not writers, they are not funny and nobody is buying these VNs to read their writings, but rather experience the original story.
Whenever a company pulls something like this they should be immediately blacklisted.
The move that Japanese game devs need to do is translate these games themselves. This is why we should be supporting FOSS translation software. Make all these translators obsolete and cut their these fucks off for good.
For example we a free and open source translation app called “Dialect”, so f♥♥k those translators, we don’t need them.
Shiravune is a Japanese company owned by DMM itself, and their translations have been among the worst in the VN sphere.
I only bought dohna dohna from them, and the translation sounded ok to me.
I also only played Dohna Dohna, and the translation there was fine. I mean they even used the term “lolicon” correct there, instead of localizing it to “paedo”.
My guess is that Dohna Dohna was the exception, and the localizer who worked on it was probably fired by the other localizers, because he did a half decent job.
Me too, it’s the only game I played from them and it was decent for me as well.
Hell, they even got “lolicon” correct, as Porno keeps calling Kuma lolicon and they kept “lolicon” instead of localizing it to “ped0”.
My guess is that Dohna Dohna was a one time only thing, guess the localizer who worked on it actually did his job, so the other localizers got him fired or something.
Absolutely massacred these translations and this is why people will call it out and need to keep calling it out. They need to stop being middle men for Japanese media and injecting politics where it doesn’t exist.
Make translators obsolete by getting devs to use free and open source translation software such as Dialect.
I’m sure plenty of these japanese gaming companies are well aware of the censorship and translators, they just wash their hands off of it. Because of that they don’t deserve support, just pirate their s♥♥t from now on.
Also this Ittaku twat is likely the source of the lolicon to paedo translation. While working for NekoNyan he’s been accusing fans of those games of being that, saying that Japan is filled with paedos and even accusing his employer having them on staff. The guy is clearly obsesses (and likely projecting) and he somehow keeps getting hired.
Guy sounds like a real POS who can’t keep his opinions out of his work. No wonder he’s in the modern industry. SMH
They don’t even sound like stuff people would say in public.
Sincerely, maybe i’m simply too old to understand the new generation but those meme things which has been kind of trendy in recent years just looks like stupid, unproductive and first and foremost excessively tedious comments, debate and discussion were interesting when people where actually talking about content and not doing an everlasting wasn’t contest of who will use this latest trendy word / image faster which as been in 10k differents others topics within the same month faster than the other guy.
The result is what we are seeing there, a bunch of new pejorative words suddenly appearing one after another while being less and less explicit when people could have just stick the whatever was already used and implemented for decades.
Policorre again. They will never go away unless people take a stand. Stop the infestation!
>Policorre
Let me localize this properly:
Ashkenazi jew meddling.
