Shigeru Miyamoto Explains “Strong & Brave” Princess Peach in Super Mario Bros. Movie

Shigeru Miyamoto Explains "Strong & Brave" Princess Peach in Super Mario Bros. Movie

Many have noticed the added boldness in Princess Peach’s personality for the Super Mario Bros. Movie, and series creator Shigeru Miyamoto explained the reasoning behind the “evolution” of the character.

Miyamoto explained Peach’s personality and more in a video interview:

According to the Super Mario Bros. creator, in the video games, the developers needed to make it simple and easy to understand what the objective is, so they kept her as a “damsel in distress” so that the players could easily understand her role.

Miyamoto also mentioned that they always wanted to make her bold and show more sense of responsibility as a princess, so for the movie, they decided to make her a more assertive character who is capable of fighting.

Japanese Internet denizens commented on the matter:

“Peach always fought since way back then. Nowadays, you see people saying she’s stronger than Bowser so she gets caught on purpose.”

“Come on, don’t bend over for political correctness. Just admit that since she’s a princess, her role is to be rescued.”

“Well, she was playable and unparalleled in Mario USA (Super Mario Bros. 2).”

“She was neko Peach in Mario 3D World!”

“Peach also fights in Super Smash Bros., unlike Breath of the Wild’s Zelda.”

“I’m sure Miyamoto is also annoyed by the politically correct twist they’re giving her.”

“That’s called being politically correct.”

“It’s just them being conscious of political correctness, right? That general idea wasn’t around in the past, so she was made to be a woman who needed to be rescued.”

“Hey, she was beating up enemies with frying pans since Mario RPG.”

“Saying ‘she has always fought’ then going on about her ‘change’ now… isn’t that just admitting to bending over to political correctness?”

“This totally feels like an alibi. There’s no way they were thinking about that back when they were making the game.”

“People will be angry if they don’t make a black Princess Zelda now!”

“The next work will feature Peach with short hair and a buff body.”

“Just make Princess Peach black already.”

“Rainbow Road was just a strategic placement by LGBT!”

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now available to watch in cinemas worldwide.
