Netflix Establishes In-House Game Studio

Netflix, perhaps after realizing the severity of its recent performance, is establishing its own in-house game studio in an attempt to rely less on third-party developers, and promises to make “world class” original titles without ads or in-app purchases (which seems to be impossible for some greedy developers).

The game studio will be based in Helsinki and Marko Lastikka, from Zynga and EA, will serve as a director. This is the first time Netflix will build a studio as opposed to purchasing existing ones (such as The Walking Dead developer Next Games).

Amir Rahimi, the VP of Game Studios, spoke in a press release:

“This is another step in our vision to build a world-class games studio that will bring a variety of delightful and deeply engaging original games — with no ads and no in-app purchases — to our hundreds of millions of members around the world. It’s still early days, and we have much more work to do to deliver a great games experience on Netflix. Creating a game can take years, so I’m proud to see how we’re steadily building the foundation of our games studios in our first year, and look forward to sharing what we produce in the coming years.”

While several games are available through Netflix’s mobile app, it is alleged that less than one percent of Netflix subscribers play the service’s games on a daily basis.

New job listings that began last month, as well as the addition of new social features to its games service, indicate that Netflix is slowly building up its gaming sector.
