Peak TikTok “Challenge” Involving Jumping in Front of Speeding Car Causes Death

Social media continues to outdo itself when it comes to convincing those with the lowest mental faculties to perform degrading and ignorant stunts solely for attention, as the latest TikTok trend in Indonesia involves jumping in front of a speeding car and hoping it stops.

Known as “Malaikat Maut”, or “Angel of Death”, the “challenge” has led to numerous individuals (usually 18 or younger) getting hit by vehicles, resulting in severe injury and even death for some.

Three teenage boys on June 3rd trying to recreate the suicidal stunt in Banten’s Tangerang City led to one of them, an 18-year-old, getting struck by an eight-wheel truck, instantly ending his life:

Both the truck driver and the two children who managed to avoid harm were detained by Karawaci Police and are being questioned about the incident.

Sadly, this is not a singular instance, as other children have attempted the challenge (which began in 2021) on previous occasions, such as a 14-year-old boy on June 2nd who failed to move away from an oncoming truck, causing him to get hit and suffer a fractured skull and shattered teeth.

Police are hunting for the driver that fled the scene, and authorities are seeking to hand him hit-and-run charges.

There was another case on July 11th, 2021 where a group of eight children tried to perform the reckless stunt, ending the life of a 13-year-old boy while three others were maimed.

TikTok creators were allegedly warned to cease pushing out content that involves performing dangerous acts for no purpose other than virality, but it is said many were unhindered by these warnings.

Psychologist Rose Mini Agoes Salim explained the reason behind these teenagers having such an urge to do something life-threatening, saying “Psychologically, these teenagers are looking for self-identity. So they will look for a place to show their existence.”
