Racewalk Athletes Vomit After Drinking Water Mixed With Hand Sanitizer

A high school sports competition had several athletes vomiting after drinking the water provided to them in cups, leading to some of the athletes quitting midway, and certain to have some wondering if this was some form of sabotage.

Yamanashi Prefectural High School’s spring physical education competition was being held at JIT Recycle Ink Stadium in Kofu City, and it was learned that the water used to pour into cups for the participating athletes contained alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

One participant who drank the contaminated water grew ill and withdrew from the competition midway through, and they sought medical aid alongside two others; all of them are said to be recovering from their affliction.

According to Yamanashi Prefectural High School’s athletics department, the cups that held the sanitizer were made available to those participating in the women’s 5000m racewalk, and they were set down near the water supply area.

One runner vomited the second he imbibed the tainted water, prompting them to immediately quit the competition, similarly, two others also drank the water and subsequently vomited, and then went to seek aid at a hospital – both individuals allegedly went home the same day and are headed toward recovery.

The school’s athletics department claimed the water from the water supply area was kept in the equipment storage inside the stadium, and that before the event, the janitor brought three PET bottles (two liters) to the water supply area and emptied their contents into the cups.

The one bottle that had the disinfectant was said to be unlabeled and placed in the same box as the other bottles, leading the department to suspect this bottle was served by accident and that the disinfectant went unnoticed.
