Square Enix Boss: “The Japanese Can’t Make Good Games by Copying the West!”

Square Enix President and CEO Yosuke Matsuda recently shared his outlook on the company’s future, emphasizing the importance of the global market and knowing what fans want from Japanese video games.

Despite recently censoring their games and purposely retooling certain scenes in the Final Fantasy VII Remake to take into account “modern sensibilities”, Matsuda insisted that they shouldn’t be “developing for the overseas market”.

Some highlighted quotes from Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda’s interview with Gendai Business:

“The game market is globalizing. The Japanese market used to be large, but now it is second only to China and the United States. There’s no business without global recognition.”

“Interestingly, the Japanese can’t make something good by simply imitating Western games. Everything from the monster pictures to audio and video effects ends up being somewhat Japanese. And those are the good parts about Japanese games recognized by players worldwide.”

“The overseas market is important, but that doesn’t mean we should be developing for the overseas market.”
