The one that made me cry the most was Macross: Frontier, though that was mostly just the song Diamond Crevasse (watched originally right after my wife passed). Number 2 was Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, specifically the scene of Hoenheim talking at his wife’s grave. Number 3 is Steins;Gate when Okabe confesses to Kurisu, then sends her off to die. None of them are sad anime, just ones I connected with sad events in my own life.
The f♥♥k, what the hell is Crayon Shin-Chan doing on this list? Oh yeah, according to kids, so they cry about everything.
I guess the only one who managed to almost bring me to real tears (not for the same reasons) were GunGrave, Capeta and City Hunter.
Some others might have started something but never really managed to almost break me as the three above managed to do.
Perhaps they imitated Crayon Shin-chan and got a spanking from their parents. Thus they ended up crying.
Only time I remember crying tears of joy was when Stormin Adolf Norman from Promised Neverland, saying genocide is the only way to save the kids from being eaten and then they had the mystical panacea appear soon after that made doing genocide irrelevant, which made me sad.
Gungrave is the only anime that made me ever cry. Not sure whether children should watch it, though.
The only anime I can say legitimately reduced me to tears is Clannad: After Story
