Russia Bans Five Isekai Anime, Deems They Promote “Reincarnation Beliefs”

In another move that will prove baffling to normal individuals, it is said Russia’s government has now banned more anime, albeit specifically ones that are of the isekai genre (being brought to an alternate world) because they are believed to promote “reincarnation beliefs”.

Popular isekai shows have been banned from specific Russian websites after the Russian district court in Saint Petersburg deemed they encouraged belief in “reincarnation” and that “after death, there can be a more full and interesting life, free from control of one’s parents”.

Five total anime were banned by way of the federal Russian law for “the protection of children from harmful information”: KonoSuba, Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken, Zombie Land Saga, Nekopara (which isn’t even an isekai), and Princess Lover!.

The news was spread via the court’s Telegram channel and it cited the ban was carried out after “experts” weighed in, explaining the shows brainwash children with ideas of reincarnation:

The court has ruled that, for example, KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World! promotes reincarnation beliefs by showing that after death there can be a more full and interesting life, free from control of one’s parents. The world after death is shown to be colorful, full of adventures and offering an opportunity to lead an indulgent life full of drinking, sexual relations and unlawful activities, while the real life is shown as joyless and filled with loneliness.

As per the usual strategy of censorship-lovers, the banned selections were also slandered as “pornographic”, even though none of the anime have full nudity or sex (Nekopara and Princess Lover! do have a separate ero-anime and eroge however).

These bannings only apply to a few hosting sites (like the bans on Death Note and Tokyo Ghoul back in January), though it is suggested the width of this ban could expand.
