Final Fantasy VII Remake Remaking More Than Anticipated

Those who managed to get their hands on the earlier released copies of the Final Fantasy VII Remake have been uploading footage of the game online, revealing that it, for the most part, adheres to the original’s sequence of events (aside from a few extra additions and padding) – though, the ending makes implications that are leaving some rather worried.

Needless to say, this post will be rife with spoilers in regards to what happens in the action remake.

The entire ending sequence, which is quite the departure from the original as the characters try to defy “fate”:

For clarity, strange apparitions have been following the characters since the start of the game, preventing them from doing anything too far off from the original Final Fantasy VII (apart from what the developers consider canon apparently, as there are still new scenes and characters that were not in the previous RPG).

These apparitions are explained to be “Whispers” by talking rat dog Red XIII:

As Cloud and his companions meet with Sephiroth during the finale (another deviation from the source material), a final battle is had with the Whispers and they are defeated, making fans theorize that the game’s future volumes might continue to deviate from the original story, as the characters are no longer held in check.

Other theories claim that Sephiroth is trying to “remake” the world in such a way so that he is not defeated (a Sephiroth from the alternate “Advent Children” timeline), giving significance to the game having the word “remake” in its title.

Whatever the case, the developers are clearly intent on making some changes to the story, as major twists were already divulged way ahead of when they were meant to be (Hojo telling Cloud that he is not a SOLDIER), and characters such as Biggs and Wedge (and Zack) managed to avoid their deaths.

It seems the developers instead wanted a reimagining instead of merely giving fans a graphically updated version of the same story they know and love – whatever happens in the next volumes could very well be completely new.
