Atelier Ryza Producer: “I Didn’t Think People Would Find Her Sexy!”

The producer of Atelier Ryza has made the extraordinary claim that he did not think people would notice Reisalin’s thighs or regard her as sexually attractive.

Producer Junzo Hosoi has spoken about the design decisions that led to the creation of thigh idol Reisalin Stout, saying that she was intended to be a mere farmer’s daughter with no sexual magnetism. According to the interview:

Question: What’s the design process like for each protagonist of the Atelier series? Each one is unique and easily identifiable with their respective entry.

In this case, the setting is that she’s a farmer’s daughter, but then we thought, “Well a skirt and farming – that doesn’t go well together.” We don’t really want their underwear showing as well. So we decided to go with the short-shorts. The other aspect is that because it’s summer – that’s the theme – so that’s how we came up with the design.

So surprisingly a lot of people are paying attention to her thighs. We didn’t create her with the intention of her thighs being the key point, but a lot of people seem to be really… (Laughs)

Our approach was to make a cute character without any sexual innuendo whatsoever. Everyone sort of looks at her as sort of being sexy, and that’s completely not how we look at her, so that really caught us by surprise. (Laughs)

These claims of innocence may be contrasted with Hosoi’s comments about character designer Toridamono. Hosoi was previously quoted as saying:

Toridamono really focused on getting Laiza’s thighs just right. There were also some Gust staff who followed his lead. (laughs)

Atelier Ryza was released in Japan on the 26th of September. The game will be released for PS4, Switch and PC on the 29th of October in North America and the 1st of November in Europe.
