Man Threatens Square Enix “You’ll Burn Like KyoAni!”

A man has been arrested after making threats of violence against once-great video game publisher Square Enix.

Tokyo’s Metropolitan Police have arrested a 40-year-old man after he was caught making threats against Square Enix. The man accused the company of making “kusoge” and threatened to perform a KyoAni-style copycat attack. He sent the threat after the arson murder occurred at Kyoto Animation’s main studio building, which took the lives of 35 employees.

Police report that the man made the threatening email because he was angry about losing at a game and wanted his money back, although it is not clear which game was the source of his frustration or what sums of money were involved.

This is not the first time this year a disgruntled consumer has been arrested for threatening the company. In April, a 25-year-old man was apprehended by police due to sending threats after losing ¥200,000 on a gacha game.
