8chan Taken Down “It Inspired Terrorism”

Content delivery network service Cloudflare has terminated its service for the image board known as 8chan (although the site remains available through the Tor network), unsurprisingly claiming the “unmoderated” site to be an “inspiration for terrorism” and blaming it for the El Paso shooting rather than the criminal.

Cloudflare has stopped providing services to the 8chan image board, essentially removing the site from the internet by allowing it to suffer DDoS attacks; the site’s notoriously slow Tor service remains online, however.

A company spokesman justified the decision in a recent blog post by labeling the site as an inspiration for terrorism, citing the recent shooting in the Texas city of El Paso, where the gunman was said to have “posted a screed” on the site before commencing his murderous rampage.

The spokesman predictably demonstrated hypocrisy on the matter by stating “Cloudflare is not a government. While we’ve been successful as a company, that does not give us the political legitimacy to make determinations on what content is good and bad”.

It should be noted, however, that the San Francisco-based corporation has had fewer moral qualms about providing services for far deadlier Islamic terrorist organizations such as the Taliban, Hamas and Al-Shabaab. The company has also been accused of providing services for websites affiliated with the Islamic State.

It is likely that the site will return using a different security service provider in the near future.
