Tokyo Train Station Security Robot Patrols Diligently

A large and suspicious security robot has been spotted patrolling the Seibu Shinjuku Station in Tokyo.

Although the robot looks as if it’s about to start sprouting legs and deploy its laser annihilation systems, it’s completely harmless and actually works to keep commuters safe from danger.

The Perseusbot is an autonomous robot developed by Seibu Railway, the Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Technology Research Institute and Japanese artificial intelligence companies Earth Eyes and Nihon Unisys.

Its main job is to scan its patrol route with cameras, analyze and compare images sent to it by other cameras spread around the area and to determine which humans are moving around aggressively and dangerously – it can also detect unattended packages.

Once Perseusbot discovers anything worth noting, it immediately contacts human security staff to handle the problem.

The bowling pin shaped robot finished its test run at the Seibu Shinjuku Station on the 30th of November, but its creator plans to do a lot more field testing to further determine its full capabilities.
