Sony’s PlayStation 4 is already being heralded as the victor of the 8th generation console war, as news of just how poor Microsoft’s Xbox One offering is have begun to sink in, with poor specs, a pathetically weak games line-up, excessive emphasis on TV rather than games, no backwards compatibility and no support for used games all combining to offer a massive boost to Sony’s share price.
The latest hardware comparison information, still not officially confirmed but widely believed to be correct based on earlier leaks:

Presumably these specs are regarded as sufficient for watching TV, playing EA Sports titles and waiting to connect to the latest cloud gaming extravaganza, but there are major doubts as to them putting up serious competition to the PS4 as time progresses – although the possibility of MS simply bribing developers to restrict the graphics of multi-platform titles to Xbox One levels has also been raised.
As if all this were not bad enough, Microsoft has also confirmed what had been amongst the worst fears for the PlayStation 4 – it will not play used games, unless the user pays a ransom to let them register the game on their Xbox Live account:
Individual games will be tied to Xbox Live accounts, Microsoft said, meaning that the software giant can detect whether a game has been sold to a retailer and repurchased, or handed from one friend to another. In such instances, the second user must pay a fee.
“On the new Xbox, all game discs are installed to the HDD to play,” a Microsoft representative told Wired.
The company added that, once discs are installed on the hard drive, games can be played without a disc being in the tray.
The Wired article then elaborates:
“What follows naturally from this is that each disc would have to be tied to a unique Xbox Live account, else you could take a single disc and pass it between everyone you know and copy the game over and over. Since this is clearly not going to happen, each disc must then only install for a single owner.”
The news that Sony has likely already won the console war for the entire next generation sent their stock surging even as Microsoft’s announcement continued:
who ever writing this is wrong xbox one does have xbox 360 compatibility
erm… Ps4 is not backwards compatible, hate piss poor rumor posts.
Ps3 and backwards games may be available to stream over the genkai/cloud like system. whether or not that will require the PS4 to be constantly connected to the net when playing such games is unknown because Sony has said very little.
Sony confirmed they would not lock games to an account but Game developers could meaning it will be that same as Xbox but not ‘Sonys’ fault.
Xbox one does look poor but trying to compare it to an unknown console (which sounds pretty much similar imho)is pointless.
& yes Ps3 games looked worse than Xbox 360 for the most part because the game was made on Xbox 360 then ported to Ps3 (eg Fall outs, Skyrim, CoD -and of course all the glitches it caused in some titles) unless it was designed by one of sonys studios or a developer that took the time and effort like Konamis Metal gear solids.
If the ps4 is easy for developers to make games for it may give them the edge this time purely on that. Sony has made a lot of mistakes with the Ps3 and have learned from them (install times, crap triggers on the pads, crap network for multiplayer).
if games are made for which ever the lower spec system turns out to be and ported due to the ease. It might make no difference in graphics between the two systems for the most part.
So, what point to buy xbox discs anyway? If they linked to account then its nothing more than digital key now/
I really don;t have any criticism of Xbox – don’t care enought to go there. But I will be buying a PS4 because of being a fan of some of the previuosu exclusives & wnating to see what those devs come out with for the next playstation. It’s all about the games to me.
Sony shares spiked to their highest level in two years Wednesday as the company said it would consider a proposal to spin off its movie and music division.
That is the real reason behind that spike in Sony stocks, not this…
