Microsoft has announced it will be closing its original Xbox Live service worldwide in April.
Xbox Live services and online gaming for the first Xbox console, including for any original games playable on the Xbox 360, will be terminated on April 15th, 2010.
Some might marvel that they even kept it going this long.
No actual reason is given, but it is most probably due simply to the tiny number of players remaining for this system.

no matter never liked the xbox anyways...
I had nothing at all that I wanted on the original Xbox console, but I could see why some people might be sad. They're probably trying to flush out the remaining people with the original Xbox console, just for the hell of it. It's not like that's going to force them to get a 360, anyway.
Neat. :l
Now I have to play Guilty Gear locally with friends...
mwaaahhhhahahahahaa
you fail xbox
Nice misleading title.
Still a lot of people want to play the old games online.
OH SHIT IT'S A MIRACLE!!!
Ah will miss the old Halo 2 xbl nights straight.
hate this hate that. who cares who likes what. if you like your console no need to think about others, simple as that.
on a different note project natal the 360 looks very interesting, while the copy of the wii-mote by sony seems rather cheap.
i own neither but it ammuses me that sony fail to come up with something new. at least ms are trying with natal.
LOL, no more Counter-Strike
Wow, do you morons REALLY not read these articles or are you just incapable of comprehending what they say? They are ending the service support for the original xbox, not the 360.
...R.I.P MechAsssault.....you were a good friend....
Wow, this happened on my birthday based on the article, RIP original Xbox...
That's why you play on PC.
What does this mean for DLC? Does this mean that games with any kind of downloadable content will have that content lost forever?
Mysterious Voice: "Just hack the game. That stuff was already on the disk in the first place, and no LIVE means no subscriptions to end."
...I swear, I can count percentages of Sankaku when it comes to debates like this.
65%: People who look foward to seing Microsoft fail for whatever reason and never acknowledge when it does right.
25%: People who are willing to give Microsoft a chance, but are silenced by the all-encompassing 65%.
10%: People who primarily play PC games and wish death upon the others.
And all three of these groups hate each other and can never go along.
Mysterious Voice: "That's because 25% of the population is retarded."
...are you looking for a fight.
Mysterious Voice: "I'm a troll. I'm always looking for a fight."
Don't see what the big issue is. It's an old console, and they plan on ending support for the online service. That being said, there are still ways to play some of these games online without live even if it does take some work on the side of the player.
Furthermore, not trying to display any xbox/ms "fanboism" but I decided to go the route of the Xbox -> 360 Elite, as opposed to going with the Sony systems (having ample experience with the other systems and just not liking it as much) and I can say that I'm quite pleased with my choice.
As it has been neither by xbox, or my 360 have broken down once or shown any errors, except for the time that I bought a used from a game X-change where the disc came in pretty bad condition (my fault for not checking the disc before I left) and needless to say I just went back to the store and exchange it free of charge for a working disc!
As it is, it really just comes down to what people prefer, so just stick to what you prefer and stop bitching because *gasp* others have a differing opinion!
amazing how retarded some of you are. the original xbox only allows 100 friends among other things, and it's easier just to cut the services off than to program updates for an obsolete system
it just consoles from country that drop nuke on a city just for testing it..
My original xbox still works great...and it's a 1.0 unit purchased on launch day!
Pay 50 bucks for superior online service, have it shut down. Good call M$.
It's raist to cut down service of the BLACK console but not for the WHITE aswell!
LOL CONSOLE GAY-MING
Tonight for shits and giggles, maybe I'll load up Warcraft: Orcs & Humans on my PC and play over the Internet with someone.
Or perhaps some Starcraft. Or Diablo II.
Made 13 years ago, yet you can still play online.
why does this website always get their story wrong in regards to xbox. its so biased to the ps3. you need to sankaku
WE NEED TO PERFORM A SANKAKU
By Japan you mean the world.
So, Xbox Live for 360 dies on... February 2014?
Um Artefact you might wanna retranslate that article. The actual quote on the Japanese page says
"Xbox Live services and online gaming for the first Xbox console, including for any original xbox games playable on the Xbox 360, will be terminated on April 15th, 2010."
They are closing the online service for old xbox games, including the ones that are backwards compatible. Xbox360 games will be unharmed by this.
I added two extra incidences of the word "original" to make it doubly clear for you.
Actually, MS is pulling the Xbox Live plug for the first Xbox *entirely*. I.e. ALL games from the original Xbox (even those that can be played in the 360) will be disabled from online play.

Sankaku strikes again with its terrible wording.
Thanks, let me update that.
You've still got the title wrong
The title is completely correct. Xbox live service is ending. Xbox 360 live service isn't of course.
Uhhh, they're just cutting original Xbox service for all regions. Xbox360 live is still staying up everywhere, Japan included :/
Er. No they aren't.
This is just for original Xbox games, and it goes into effect internationally.
Learn to read?
They arent ending ALL XBL content, just for games on the first classic Xbox. Xbox360 content will still exist. They are ending Live service on classic Xbox content for America also
Until 6 years after the next Xbox is released.
"No actual reason is given, but it is most probably due simply to the tiny number of players remaining for this system, never popular in Japan even during its peak years."
This isn't why they're ending it. They're ending it for every country due to them not wanting to spend the money to keep it running, and they're touting updates to Live for 360 games as the trade-off.
xlink kai
Mod me informative oh wait...
Minus the Japan part it is exactly why they are ending it - too few users now.
Sorry, but even this is not entirely true.
Microsoft admits that a significant amount of players still play certain original xbox games over live. Halo2 for example, still has a an absurd amount of players. Among several other old hit titles.
The reasons are not made clear, but they lie elsewhere.
Surely even Microsoft wouldn't... nevermind, I see. Thanks, although proper sourcing is probably not forthcoming?
Wait, so is this just for original Xbox games or all Xbox 360 games, too?
Its only original XBox games. The end of service is for all countries to make way for 360 service updates.
Yeah, like were going to see any services that's worth more then keeping older online games alive. M$ with all the money in the world yet can't even stay dedicated as modders and such.
Uh, they aren't just ending it for Japan.
^ what he said, they are ending the service everywhere not just in Japan.
Link for info of 'international' cessation.
Google it. It's been common knowledge for going on four days now.
