The overall Japanese sales figures for Blu-ray discs in 2009 reveal the format to be dominated by anime, with Bakemonogatari and K-ON! making very strong showings…
The BD sales in detail:
1. 96,000 – Evangelion 1.11
2. 75,000 – The Dark Knight
3. 51,000 – Bakemonogatari 1
4. 49,000 – FFVII Advent Children
5. 47,000 – Bakemonogatari 2
6. 46,000 – Terminator 4
7. 46,000 – Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
8. 44,000 – Bakemonogatari 3
9. 42,000 – Biohazard Degeneration
10. 40,000 – K-ON!
BD sales certainly appear to be driven by anime in the Japanese market. The trailing titles are comprised of the other K-ON! discs followed by Macross… A top listing of DVD sales would however feature only Ponyo, with anime sales dwarfed by various music DVDs.
However, if actual gross sales rather than copies sold are considered, the dominance of anime over BD sales is even more apparent.
Below are the gross Blu-ray sales, measured in hundreds of millions of yen (100 million yen is approximately 1.1 million US dollars):
1. 5.9 – Evangelion 1.11
2. 3.9 – Bakemonogatari 2
3. 3.7 – The Dark Knight
4. 3.7 – Bakemonogatari 1
5. 3.7 – Bakemonogatari 3
6. 3.6 – Darker Than Black Blu-ray Box
7. 3.2 – K-ON! 1
8. 3.1 – FFVII Advent Children
9. 2.8 – K-ON! 2
10. 2.6 – K-ON! 3
With 6 BD discs apparently averaging about 3.5 million dollars each, Bakemonogatari looks set to command sales over 20 million dollars – and this excludes normal DVD sales. Shafted indeed…
Anime is so expensive.
Stop with this eva 1.0 bullshit, i want 2.0 on BD right now for god sake, is taking to long to be released.
