Ghibli giant Hayao Miyazaki has – to the surprise of nobody it seems – retracted his latest promise to retire, making it the 7th time he has vowed to quit only to think better of it.
The withdrawal, made in a radio broadcast on New Year’s Eve, marks the 7th such recantation (although by some counts he has done it as many as 10 times).
Starting after Laputa in 1986 and again in 1992, 1997, 2001, 2004, 2008 and now 2013, it now seems a time honoured tradition for him to celebrate his latest blockbuster’s success with a retirement announcement.
Online the usual railery has intensified, with there being some mild relief that his latest “retirement marketing” will not interfere with the prospect of a Nausicaa sequel.
Come on Sankaku, I can’t believe you’re missing out on Miyazaki’s very click-bait-worthy “anime suffers because the industry is full of otaku” remarks!
Works every time!!
Only bydlo faps on miyazaki
Not surprised. Most of those old codgers have never known anything else but their working environment. They literally don’t know how to live apart from work anymore. Once they are supposed to leave, they’ll just bore themselves to death unless they find themselves back in work again. I for one wouldn’t want to end up a slave to work. In a way, those people are pretty dismal in how they would die without their work. No life Japan.
Wow. I haven’t been paying too much attention to him lately but I had no idea Miyazaki got this much flak… pretty shocking for me.
Scratch that. I should just say ‘Miyazaki gets flack?’ Looks like I might as well be living under a rock…
