Smoking in Japan is “banned”, or at least restricted, in the sense that smokers are always put into their own sections, although depending on the kind of place, the smoking section might be a lot bigger and nicer than the non-smoking section (in which case, I sometimes choose to endure the smoke).

A ban on public smoking was passed in parts of Tokyo recently though, which is quite nice.
