Sharp-eyed observers can’t help but notice that upcoming blockbuster RPG Final Fantasy XIII’s graphics seem to have suffered a substantial degradation since the first promotional shots were released.

Now shots of the game are looking distinctly polygonal…

Originals are above, later shots below:

ff13-graphical-degradation-7.jpg
ff13-graphical-degradation-4.jpg
ff13-graphical-degradation-8.jpg
ff13-graphical-degradation-5.jpg
ff13-graphical-degradation-2.jpg
ff13-graphical-degradation.jpg
ff13-graphical-degradation-6.jpg
ff13-graphical-degradation-3.jpg

Of course, nobody believes promotional images for games, but even so this is slightly disappointing. Fans can take solace in the high quality of female anatomy on offer

The game is due in Japan in the winter, as a “PS3 exclusive.” The delayed international release will include an Xbox 360 version.

No, the three best looking games on the the PC.

As for the screenshots, I think the first set of pictures actually improved. Others not so much. It is common with games to provide bullshots that make the game look better than it actually does. It can be done to promote the game or because they didn't actually finalize that part of the game yet.

I think you miss the point, it was the three best looking PS3 games, and that's obvious considering how the Xbox 360 is the lead platform for most games today, with some exceptions (ie Burnout Paradise).

With good third party developers the PS3 version do match the 360 ones however, take Bioshock for example, an excellent port.

360 version not going into production till after PS3 is done and released said they originally. Methinks they're holding back because they're afraid of the inevitable war between the PS3 and 360 versions when they are released, so are trying to make them both equal.

This does the PS3 no justice. Hooray for MGS4. But they're going multiplatform. So hooray for Yakuza 3 and The Last Guardian.

Lol...This comment is full of fail. Metal Gear Series is an exclusive to Playstation. I'm pretty sure no hardcore gamer plays or likes Metal Gear huh? The only reason 360 became so popular is because of Halo, and Halo sux IMO. And for a long time, Final Fantasy, and Resident Evil were exclusive on Playstation. Now they all ported to other systems as well to make more money, but remember where some of the legendary series came from fool.

Well im sorry i didnt clarify enough, I didn't mean halo, dipshits, that games enough fail as it is for me to want to throw my 360 out. i mean other fps's, such as call of duty, battlefield 2, and ghost recon advanced warfighter. and yes, playstation is for casual gamers, not to an extent of nintendo, but still enough to fail in the fps department. killzone sucked due to clunky controls, timsplitters was fail on a disc, red faction was clunky as well in controlls, and it easliy lost me story wise, and that halo knockoff resistance was just lame. crysis was ok, and bioshock did better with a story then most of the other titles for ps3, with the pc version being the best. god i hated myself for even playing them.... and it felt more comfortable to play call of duty 4 on 360, though i bet that the online isn't as populated with 12 year old "gangsta" boys with high pitched bitching when they get facerolled. oh and just to say, i didn't mean to troll with my last comment, it was imho, so if you get upset over it, deal with the fact that if someone prefers fps over fighting or rpgs, or die in a fire. BTW mgs = lame, splinter cell is superior, due to not having some mullethead, and has a more enjoyable storyline.

Bioshock is on the PS3 FYI.

Red Faction has a 360 version as well.

Timesplitters is not yet released on the PS3, and most likely will be multiplatform as well.

Killzone 2 clunky controls? Please i guess you just heard about the news about it, but it's already patched and plays like COD's controls.

There are many reasons why the Xbox 360 is considered the 'causal gamer's console'.

    1. Almost everyone has one
    2. Almost every 10 year old child has one
    3. Playstation consoles are generally geared toward RPG, JRPG, and other time consuming single player games.
    4. Almost every 10 year old internet gangster has one.
    5. it cost significantly less so that every 10 year old or 10 year old internet gangster can buy or ask his mom to buy one.
    6. The playstation has its 'hardcore' reputation from its base cost to buy/play, and its simple marketed image as the 'adult's console'.
    7. Xbox 360 has Halo, which has evolved into the American children's playground.

I dont entirely hate the xbox 360 but i have been a Sony/Nintendo fanboy since the since the Supernintendo and PS1, so...yeah...

He's right though the PS3's gpu is the weak link it's basically a nVidia 7800GTX which wasen't designed for use in a console and over all has less processing power than the xbox.

If you know anything about computers you'll know a machine is only as strong as it's weakest component.

    Comment by Psyvariar
    01:36 04/08/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Problem with Cell is it's an asymmetric multi-core CPU, which is harder for programmers and compilers to utilise as the cores all behave differently (so the machine code they process is different between cores). If you're writing a 100% PS3 exclusive title you can probably do some nice things with it at the cost of development time and sacrificing some portability, and on this inverse this means most ports to PS3 probably won't exploit all the potential.

360 uses a Symmetric multicore CPU, just like most modern PCs (each core understands the same machine code and can be used interchangeably, this also makes things easier for the low level scheduler and the compiler.) It's easier to develop for because you just use multiple threads, a tried and tested technology, and your code will still run completely fine with no modification on machines that only have 1 core too.

    Stop the bitching.
The Xbox does have a better GPU inside but the PS3 has a whole lot of floating point processing units (AKA cell).
This should mean that the PS3 has more potential power than the Xbox360 does.
That's why the first multi-platform games looked better on the 360 at first (well most of them anyways) and how you see that most games look better on the PS3 (after finally understanding the hardware and sony releasing better SDK's).

Just stop bitching and enjoy your gaming.

we're starting to get to the point where the difference in capability and ease of programming among the PS3 and 360 is starting to make problems. Despite it's clear performance benefits, PS3 games are made multi platform, and suffer in quality on the PS3 version. Although the 360 is much easier to program games for, it's lower performance and lack of blu ray has already caused problems for developers. When it comes down to it, multi platform games end up hurting both consoles.

As for this game....if the 360 version ends up being lag free, it's because they reduced the quality. Plus, i wouldn't put it past Square Enix to focus more on the 360 version, and lower quality on the PS3 as well.

I hope FF Versus XIII will still remain an exclusive.

And now you know why Nintendo went for a completely different approach to console design for this generation. Staying away from the festering industry mantra of NEED MOAR GRAFIX NAOZZZZZ, their new philosophy managed to sell almost as many consoles as both competitors combined. They've also been relatively free of the inane fanboyism of the other two consoles.

People should really lighten up on all the flaming with regard to which console is better or which game is best and try to remember that, occasionally, people will play games simply to have fun with their free time.

No. Square Enix just hyped up the game with their movie making department, but realizing that fitting a game on 10 blu-rays or 130 HDDVDs wouldn't sell the game well. So they opted for 1 bluray and 2 HDDVDs. Also does wonders for game framerate, as a PS3 wouldn't be able to render a game with the graphics of A Spirit Within or Advent Children over 5 FPS on a PS3.

The logic is the the 360 overpowers the PS3 on multiconsole releases.

You can try to suggest that exclusivity and ground up development solely on the PS3 will change things but that's hypothesis at best.

Factually, proven by the multiconsole releases, the PS3 is unable to even equal the 360 in graphic resolution. If anything, the PS3 is holding the graphic quality of FF13 back and it should be of superior quality if they didn't have to take Sony's graphic limitations into consideration.

Wait till the PS3 can match the 360's graphic resolution in a multiconsole release before you dream of any PS3 exclusive developed title to be any different.

frankly, the difference is marginal and an acceptable reduction of detail for limited hardware.

gaming consoles are not (yet) up to the task of producing raytracing quality images. then again, would a dual gtx295 + a quadcore-i7 with 32gb ram be? at least that combination can get you a higher resolution at the same quality.

fanboyism aside, shouldn't we be talking about what's wrong with the pictures instead of what's wrong with the systems?

there's an obvious polygon loss in the bottom pics, bulkier textures, less anti-aliasing.

background also looks to have taken a hit, less detail in favor of an easier to replicate texture pack. top looks drawn, bottom looks more 'filled'.

there might even be more defects if you look closer...

I hold my judgment on the matter as there is still about 5 months till release in Japan, but then again the US releases are usually improved upon before as well as other FF/KH games with the final version being Japan only release. Still the demo I imported is still beautiful as hell on my PS3 and I look forward to the some optimization to get this thing looking even better.

All of you assuming that it is a difference between PS3 and 360 are a bunch of idiots.

On the topic, it happens often: first the company releases a promotional CG video, which is done on a highly powerful machines capable of rendering it (no console or mainstream PC would be enough for this task), and only then they develop and show us the video based on the real engine that powers the game.

This happend with Motorstorm and Killzone 2 when the PS3 was still in the development.

It is rather simple to find the reason for this degradation.
I mean they create the White Engine originally only for the PS3 and then changed it to a multi Engine even including the Wii and PC, even after they buyed the U3 for their multi games.
Of course this Engine isn't able to produce the same quallity as before on either system, because no system can now be used to its peak.
I never heard of a multi Engine that could bring multiple systems to its peak in a positive.

I learned my lesson to not touch Final Fantasy after FFVIII... Square markets its games using prerendered CG footage, which is nothing like the in-game graphics. All flash and barely any play... heck even in-game battles are nothing more than selecting menus and watching special moves and spell effects animations. Of the dozens of hours consumed in a modern FF game, a majority is WATCHING videos instead of actual gameplay. Although I was really tempted with IX.

I could care less about how many polys this or that or whether something is true HD or upscaled. Give me back my hand-drawn sprites in my RPGs dammit.

If you know anything about computers you’ll know a machine is only as strong as it’s weakest component

    Comment by somebody else

Atleast the nVidia GPU 7800GTX was custimised with Sony together instead of just taking an ATI desktop GPU for the X360 and even so this difference is minor between the GPUs.
And even so what is better, that it has 512MB VRAM instead of 256MB.
With its superior CPU the PS3 could use Procedural textures which are far superior to normal textures (less size, work on every resolution without any loss in quality, no need for anti alaising and so on), but that won't work so good if they have to include the another system.
Still this only a way, they never said something about procedural textures for this game.

Problem with this also is that the games tend to be shorter when the graphics are the focal point. Seems to be getting more common, and that saddens me.

Wow - Square sure did drop the ball in a big way.

    I know graphics aren't everything...

... but this is a Final Fantasy game. Ever since the PlayStation era - YES - graphics are everything for the Final Fantasy series.

Eye candy is the only selling-point I see for this series, unless you happen to be one of the millions of people that are still charmed by the same character archetypes, same plot/scenarios and same battle systems that we've had for more than a decade now.

I don't see that huge of a difference. Then again, I'm not that visual a person. But to the poster above---if the graphics are the main selling point for FF for you, you could probably do better elsewhere. Personally, I guess I am just the kind of sap who likes Squares stories and characters---I even prefer traditional turn based combat to quasi-real time as in FFXII. I'd sooner play WoW if I wanted the later.

Fuck it all. I don't care about SUPER AMAZING EYE-BLEEDINGLY GREAT REALISTIC ULTRA AWESOME GRAPHICS, I want artistic games. Look at Okami. It's a great game, and graphic quality don't matter there because it's artistic! If people stopped aiming for realism, and instead made things artistic, then games could be fun for a change!

I for one would like to play a game where it starts out super realistic and then turns into a cartoony wonderland where anything can and WILL happen. Like the Wizard of Oz. Something like that would make me cry TEARS OF JOY...but it's a shame everyone's too busy waiting for GRITTY SHOOTAN GAME 6 to care about artsy fartsy FUN games.

Anyone remembers MGS2 on dev tool versus MGS2 on PS2?
    Same effect exactly.

If they DID downgrade 13 visual quality so 360 retards, excuse me, fans, can't complain about the difference with the PS3 version, it is inded the dumbest move ever.

As long as it looks as good as the demo did, it's more than fine enough to me.

PS3 for japanese games. (FF, MGS, GT etc)

XBOX360 for the western games. (Halo, GTA, GOW etc)

    PC for everything.

This game will decide which system is better in terms of graphics. Still,.. this game is taking for ever to be released. It did however save me $400 dollars. This is the one game that would of made me buy a PS3.

If history is anything to go by, the better-looking shots are most likely from the 360 version.

All 360/PS3 multiplatform games released so far have either looked and/or ran better on the 360 or (more rarely) are the same.

The only PS3 games that actually look good are exclusives build from the ground up on the PS3.

Comparing the 3D capabilities of the PS3 and 360 is like comparing the 2D capabilities of the Sega Saturn and PS1. Saturn was technically supperior in that regard, but was only noticeable in games designed for it, which weren't very many (because the system was less popular than the competition, was more expensive, and the extra processor thrown in at the last minute made it a pain in the ass to program for. Sound familiar?). Too bad the PS3's library of exclusives isn't as good as the Saturn's.

Yeah, the Saturn gave me more happiness too. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the PS3 and its current library. The 360 is far more Saturn-like in that regard, I think.

    18:24 04/08/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

    I wouldn't go that far.

The PS3 is fairly Saturn-ish. Its the one with less market penetration and a supposedly more powerful hardware that's difficult to program for.

The 360 is fairly PS1-ish. Its the supposedly weaker hardware console with strong market penetration and popular amongst the developers for its ease of programming.

The big difference here is, graphically it seems the 360 stole the Saturn attribute for domination. Looking at the multiplatform releases, the 360 beats the PS3 the same way the old Saturn beat the PS1.

That wasn't the case with 2D games that were built for the PS1 first and then later ported to the Saturn. Castlevania SotN is a great example.

I'm sorry, but I think you've missed the point,
as far as I can tell, those are "FMV" vs "in-game" comparison

When you see it like that, of course it's very clear there's a wide gap between them
because even on PS3, in-game models supposed to be low poly (about 10000 tris per char for next-gen machine usually), otherwise the machine (PS3, XBOX360, etc) can't play the game with enough framerates (slowdown or stuttering while playing)

On the other hand, FMV models are almost not limited by machine capability because they're pre-rendered (played as video, not in real-time)

They had to cut back the grpahics AND the battle system to work on the 360 platform.

Im sure they would have lvoed to make it a ps3 exclusive but we have fucktards fapping to FPS in america so they all gobble on the 360 knob.

Sadly because of people mass buying the 360 cause of their terrible taste in mass reproduced FPS there are a lot of games that arnt being released in the states that pwn all those FPS that you all fap to.

The hardware of the PS3 itself pwns the 360 drastically. Sadly though marketing is about making money. And multiplatforming will make you the most money.

The original pics were clearly from a pre-rendered FMV used to conceptualize several scenarios from the game. Designers do it all the time.

However, if the games was made specifically for either one of the platforms, and was built around the strength of the platform, it could have ended up looking almost identical to the FMVs. This would have been easier to do, if Square had developed it for the PS3 only, so they could have optimized it for it's hardware and built around the fabulous Cell - Processor.

    If only, if only...

The first pict are from pre-rendered FMV, the second picts use the actual in-game engine. Apples to oranges, you can't really compare and say the game was degraded.
