Man Falls in Love With Woman on Dating App, Gets Scammed 20 Million Yen

A man in his 50s living in Sapporo, Hokkaido, was scammed out of approximately 20 million yen by a woman he met through a dating app and fell in love with.

In October, the man in his 50s was sent multiple messages on LINE from a woman who claimed to live in Tokyo, whom he met through a dating app.

The woman then suggested he help manage an Internet shopping website, claiming that any deposits put into operating expenses would turn a profit. She made him deposit 130,000 yen and then gave him 160,000 yen as profit.

As a result, after gaining the man’s trust, he transferred 20.28 million yen through 17 transactions for about two months. He became suspicious after receiving instructions to make additional deposits but could not withdraw profits from the website.

After consulting the police, he learned it was a fraud case. According to the police, the man claimed that he “Never even spoke to the woman in a voice call.”
