Epic Games Almost Sued Sony for Fortnite Cross-Play on PlayStation

As Epic Games’ antitrust trial against Google continues, CEO Tim Sweeney recently talked about his company’s campaign to open PlayStation to cross-play for Fortnite and how they were ready to sue Sony for it.

Epic Games was one of many developers calling for Sony to enable cross-play for titles including Fortnite, Rocket League, and Ark: Survival Evolved, but Sony ‘repeatedly shot down’ the suggestion until finally relenting in September 2018.

“We were willing to fight them in court if necessary,” said Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney during his time on the witness stand.

The conversation surrounding a June 2018 email that Sweeney sent to then-PlayStation senior vice president Phil Rosenberg read:

“Please inform Kodera-san, and please be clear, that Epic will enable full interoperability between all platforms in Fortnite at a timely point in the future … we are prepared to pursue this course with all available resources, wherever it leads us, and for however long.”

After the discussion between the two, Sony and Epic Games have worked closer together on various projects and events, including Sony Music’s partnership on Fortnite events and Sony Pictures using Unreal Engine for some of its productions.

Sony Corporation is now a significant shareholder in Epic Games.
