Microsoft Fully Onboard With Generative AI in Games

Microsoft Fully Onboard With Generative AI in Games

A new Microsoft partnership with generative AI company Inworld reveals that the company is fully onboard with using AI-generated content for narrative purposes like story writing or in-game dialogue.

According to the official announcement, the ‘AI design copilot and character runtime engine’ will be able to create story quests and dialogue via prompts, but also the programming end, such as quest scripts and dialogue trees, supposedly making it easier to create latest-gen games. This would likely also mean AI voice acting as well for dialogue in particularly open games.

Naturally, this has created a stink on social media, particularly in the West, where the voice actor’s union has been on strike since July:

On the Japanese side, where Microsoft isn’t as renowned for their game making, there seem to be more positive opinions, especially as subsidiary Bethesda is known for expansive games:

I’m quite interested.

This might be fun.

Perhaps the day we’ll be able to have a conversation with our favorite characters is close…?

There’s an image of AI stuff being unnatural, but it’ll probably improve with time.

I hope Nintendo will also use AI to make real-time conversations in Animal Crossing.

While the usage of the tools isn’t mandated, instead being added to the toolbox only, it starts to raise questions about the way future games will be made.
