Masahiro Sakurai 'Japanese People Have a Higher Tolerance for Ecchi'

Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai was recently featured as a special guest on Game Center CX, where he talked about Japanese people having “higher tolerance for ecchi” when looking back at old Sega games.

Game Center CX has been celebrating 40 years of Sega hardware and brought in Masahiro Sakurai to play some games on the Mega Drive Mini 1.2 while sharing commentary from a developer’s perspective.

While playing Bare Knuckle II (known as Streets of Rage 2 outside of Japan), Sakurai showed how players could take a peek at pantsu by performing a jump-kick attack when playing as the female character Blaze.

However, he then changed it to the Western version and pointed out that Blaze’s panties are no longer visible, showing a look at some of the earlier instances of censorship in localization.

“I think that the Japanese have a higher tolerance for ecchi stuff,” said Masahiro Sakurai when asked if the United States and others are more strict regarding regulations.
