Japan Has More Gaijin Than Ever With Record Number of Foreign Residents

The Immigration Services Agency of Japan has announced that the number of foreigners residing in Japan as of the end of 2022 was 3,075,213, an increase of 11.4% from the previous year, which was a record high.

According to the Immigration Bureau, the number of international students and technical intern trainees has increased significantly since the easing of border measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Going by country and region, most foreigners in Japan are from China, with 761,563 people, followed by Vietnam, with 489,312, and South Korea, with 411,312—all increases from the previous year.

In terms of changes in residence status, students increased by 92,808 compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, technical intern trainees increased by 48,817. Engineers and specialists in humanities and international services increased by 37.221.

Lastly, the number of people recognized as refugees under the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act increased from 128 to 202. The number of foreigners not recognized as refugees but granted permission to stay for humanitarian reasons increased from 1,180 to 1,760. Both refugee figures are the highest since the refugee recognition system began in 1982.
