Skeb Introduces an AI that Detects AI-Generated Illustrations

Artist commission website Skeb is fighting AI with AI, with the introduction of its own AI that detects AI-generated illustrations, a move that will surely save manhours for the company that was using staff to visually check up until now.

Skeb CEO Kazunari Kida shared a blog post discussing the company’s stance on AI and the introduction of its new AI that detects AI-generated data:

  • We believe that AI is not a technology that replaces creators but rather a technology that could accelerate their creative activities in the future.
  • Since the start of the service in 2018, Skeb has always accepted only illustrations and manga drawn directly by creators as sold commodities under the “illustration” genre, and it is a violation of our policy to use data that AI fully or partially generates. The restriction is intended to prevent fraudulent use of the service, including the conversion of stolen credit cards into cash (chargeback fraud) and so on. We fight fraud every day at Skeb. Reprinted image detection AI (Google Cloud Vision API) was effective against fraudulent attempts to cash stolen credit cards using reprinted images that already exist on the Internet, but since illustration generation AI is unique data, it can be generated in large quantities, so we believe that further measures will be necessary.
  • According to Japanese laws and regulations, in light of the type and purpose of use of the work and its utilization, information analysis is prohibited so long as the interests of the copyright holder are not harmed.
  •  Since its start in 2018, Skeb has actively adopted AI, including the detection of NSFW content (Microsoft Azure Cognitive Services), detection of reproduced images (Google Cloud Vision API), and translation of request text (DeepL). All of these AI learn from other people’s copyrighted works without permission, but we believe that they are legal because they do not unfairly harm the interests of copyright holders.
  • Among some of the AI-generated illustrations, there’s the “Unlicensed AI that generates illustrations that imitate the style of a specific illustration” and “AI that generates similar illustrations by loading arbitrary illustrations,” which we do believe have a risk of bringing unfair harm to the copyright holders.
  • Skeb has signed a contract with the American AI company, Hive, and today, March 1, 2023, we’ve introduced an AI to detect AI-generated data.
  • Skeb oversees the transactions of over 100,000 illustrations per month, but unfortunately, we detect dozens of AI-generated data each month, and until now, our staff has visually checked them.
  • In some cases, we may ask creators about the production process or check the data they are working on to evaluate whether there are any possibilities of unfair use of transactions. We will enforce warnings, cancellation of applicable transactions, and permanent suspension of new requests for more severe cases.

In other recent news, contrary to Western credit card companies that block payment options for NSFW content, Japanese credit card company JCB has pushed towards allowing credit card payments for NSFW requests on Skeb.
