Square Enix Finally Updates Final Fantasy 3, Makes the Game Worse

Square Enix has updated the PC port of Final Fantasy III six years after its release, seemingly creating more problems than it solved.

The PC port of retro JRPG Final Fantasy III has received an update, alongside the Android and iOS versions. The various ports of the game now have a gallery mode, a double speed battle mode for faster grinding and even an “auto-battle” mode that allows gamers to grind without going to the trouble of actually playing the game.

The PC version has also received “upgrades” to its interface, along with extra languages (Japanese, Korean, Thai and Simple and Traditional Chinese) and a 21:9 display option.

The game’s PC port received criticism upon its 2014 release thanks to bugs that would occasionally force players to fight bosses twice or even restart the game due to being locked out of dungeons, and this tradition of poor coding seems to have continued, as Steam users have complained of crashes and fonts going outside of text boxes:

The PC and mobile versions of Final Fantasy III are based on the 2006 Nintendo DS port, which was the first official release of the game outside of Japan. The game’s storyline differs substantially from that of the original NES version, since it gives the four warriors of light their own personalities and backstories.

While the game as a whole has been comparatively well-received on the basis of its gameplay and OST, coding problems and re-use of low-polygon models and low-resolution textures from the DS version have marred the experience for many fans.
