Mega Man 11‘s Prima guide has been earning scorn online due to buyers discovering that it “stole” sprites ripped by the Spriter’s Resource, sure to have many confused why they were unable to secure official art from Capcom themselves.
The guide possesses several segments and articles spanning the Mega Man universe, one certain section had been turning heads however as it featured sprite art of characters Bass and Treble, with a fascinating signature at the bottom the makers seemingly forgot to erase:
The rips from Spriter’s Resource in comparison:
Others also called out the guide’s questionable quality:
While technically still legal in the realm of copyright law as the characters and assets in question are owned by Capcom and any unlicensed work is a grey area derivative work at best and itself infringing at worst, profuse laziness may be deemed the most appropriate label for this act.
It could also be that the resources just don’t exist anymore.
These things happen when some executive comes up with the idea of selling a book, then dumps the job of preparing it on some newcomer.
yup
It’s not like they own the fucking sprites.
As if spriters have a right to claim sprites, it’s own by Capcom, dumbasses..
They should be glad that the company don’t sue their asses for ripping their sprites…
This has nothing to do with the actual sprites that was ripped but the actual work put into ripping them. The only “work” here we can see here is someone ripped the sprites from a site, put said sprites into a book, and sell it to make a profit.
This. It used to take hours and hours to rip a few sprites. If they didn’t steal this guy’s sprite sheet, they would’ve had to pay someone else to do it.
Yes, but having a “Ripped by Deathbringer” notice below the official art on your official guide doesn’t look very professional.
Yeah. At least they left the guy’s name on there, instead of just erasing it like everyone else does.
