The unique character of Detroit’s first ever maid cafe has been making something of a stir amongst Japanese meido fanciers, for reasons both good and ill…
Chou Anime Cafe is a new fixture in Detroit’s midtown area, boasting maids and butlers serving food in the traditional moe manner:
All this has seen a predictably mixed reaction from Japanese maid fanciers:
“Nyanko omuraisu kawaii.”
“Please tell me this is a joke.”
“It looks pretty damn amazing!”
“I’d quite like to go!”
“Looks quite fun.”
“The Detroit press has been lapping it up!”
“This is what Americans think you guys are into.”
“Japanese culture has been misinterpreted somehow here.”
“Essential for fans of fat ugly women…”
“They all look like men.”
“As expected of a city of ruins…”
“Remember, in America: maids = black.”
“I thought black maids were more of a sensitive historical topic than this.”
“In any case, I’d like to try an omuraisu there.”
“Evidence of peace in the states? Anyway, their outfits are cute!”
“Why is it this kind of culture ended up being transmitted there…”
“Detroit Maid City.”

Maid cafes are stupid in general. I’ve seen pics of Japanese maids and they don’t look any cuter.
“Japanese culture has been misinterpreted somehow here.”
I must be missing something because it seems about right.
They used the wrong shade of white for the girls in maid outfits
I’d probably still go next time I’m in Windsor.
I think this looks nice. I wouldn’t go to it though; maid cafes aren’t my thing.
