The overpowering effect of Nagato Yuki on otaku has come to the attention of a female 2ch denizen, who asks how a girl with all the apparent warmth of a stone can attain such popularity.
A female Vipper poses the question “As a girl, I can’t understand why Nagato is so popular!?”:
“She’s a gloomy virgin who never changes her expression. Living with her wouldn’t be fun at all, and she isn’t even very cute. In spite of all this, why?”
Naturally such a heretical assertion encourages some interesting responses:
“The OP is unpopular!”
“Because she’s way cuter than you.”
“Nice one, old woman.”
“Women, go home!”
“For a creepy otaku, a bright and chirpy girl is frightening. It’s the same reason Rei Ayanami is popular. The end.”
“He’s right.”
“It’s because she’s 2D.”
“I’m a guy, but I understand what the OP means…”
“But it’s all about Tsuruya-san and Asakura, right?”
“I’m a girl, but I do think Nagato is cute.”
“Nagato’s goodness stems from her gloominess (reticence). From her lack of breasts. These emphasise her cuteness. The lack of these creates the supreme beauty.”
“2ch’s women aren’t women, so ignore her, Nagato’s cuteness is abnormal.”
“Lately it’s all about Haruhi. It can’t be helped.”
“Haruhi’s cute, isn’t she?”
“There are too many serious responses here…”
The fact of the matter is that Yuki is not emotionless, she was designed to be “shy” but because her superiors do not fully understand humans, she is not fully capable of displaying emotions. But it is those few glimpses of her reacting to the world around her that make those moments and indeed every moment special just waiting to see her become closer to humanity.
You claim she is unattractive but does every girl have to have ovacious curves and large breasts? No.
Yuki has small features, she doesn’t need prominent body features to stand out – it is a form of cuteness rarely displayed in anime.
She displays loyalty and intelligence, curiosity and even little understanding of simple things, much like a small child learning about the world around themselves.
She is also gentle, only once has she ever struck someone but that was only to get Kyon out of harms way quickly, otherwise, she has only acted out of defense and is even willing to put others’ lives before her own.
And virginity?
Is that supposed to be a factor to determine whether someone is good or not?
This goes back to my exploring child comment. The whole world is new to her and every interaction is important within it. Virginity is like innocence and it is important to keep it. You don’t have to be a sex hound to be good. And frankly by the fact that you even stated that she was bad for being a virgin makes me view you as though you were a prostitute.
Not everybody views things the same way and if you don’t understand it, then don’t try.
As for me, I find her features to be cute – short hair, small stature, but a certain mystery about her. A soothing voice, helpful and gentle disposition without exaggerated features most characters are given to garner attention from the audience.
In fact, most of the series does tend to revolve around Yuki more than Haruhi.
And by the way, I don’t see why so many people hate the fact that Haruhi has an upbeat attitude most of the time. Why would you want someone to feel sad or depressed? She is strong outwardly but inside, she is still a frightened girl who needs Kyon in order to feel strong. She has flaws but she tries to make up for them and even tries to make those around her happy as well, even if it’s at their expense. Maybe the reason I can say this is because I’ve read all the light novels which delve into the character’s personalities more than the anime is able to do. Haruhi grows more attached and considerate of the rest of the Brigade and acts much more maturely, so those who have only seen the anime have yet to view her in a more mature and level-headed tone.
“It’s the same reason Rei Ayanami is popular.”
… Pretty much, yeah.
She makes ronery otakus go “MOE MOE!!” TD;DR of most answers here. She’s not a bad character, but I can’t comprehend how serious fanboys get. My God, what is it about moe. *shudder*
She’s not a Rei clone; er, I thought Rei was better. No, I’m not flaming Yuki before someone starts getting all “OMG YOU TROLL” defensive, but for some reason, emotionless girls are just not that interesting to me, and Rei wasn’t completely “:|”
But I she’s not bad. The Disappearance movie is probably going to give her that characterization that I want to see, and besides, anyone who can stand Mikuru’s aggravating existence alone deserves an award.
it’s all about the Tsuruya, nyoro.
heehee, I can’t wait for those bad comment votes.
its because she hides her emotions when as supposed she shouldnt have had any, thus when at anytime she shows any little emotions , be it happy or sad , it is empified and leaves deep impressions. very unique setup. ps: i love nagato-chan rofl midori baloonn
I thought about this for a moment and I’ve come to the conclusion that Nagato Yuki is popular because she is the “Ultimate Virgin”.
Everything is new to her. She’s never had chocolate ice cream, been to a base ball game, kissed, or been in love. It’s very easy for a person to imagine them selves being her guide to the outside world and the experience of the human condition. I believe that has a lot of appeal to a lot of people for a wide verity of reasons.
I’m a girl and I love Nagato :3 She’s cute and cool at the same time. Although this is blasphemy to some otakus, I personally hate Haruhi. She’s selfish, she doesn’t really care about anyone but herself, she’s completely oblivious to the fact she’s like Mary Sue- I mean “god”, she’s abusive to Mikuru-chan, she’s too damn cheerful most of the time, she’s pretty much a crazy bitch, and she knows that she wants to f♥♥k Kyon but she doesn’t admit it. I think this girl is a bitch. I hate these women who hate other girls who are quiet. I mean they’re the goddamn annoying ones! Would you rather go out with someone who’s a little on the quiet side or someone who never shuts up? Exactly.
