Jabro did an interesting spot of research in a recent visit to Hong Kong, being sure to check out the numerous centres of otaku culture there, as well as plenty of more general sights. It does not look as if anyone with an interest in such things will have any difficulty finding what they are after in Hong Kong, not that this can be said to be surprising in the least.
As expected of a Chinese market… Chicken feet.
Abundant doujinshi.
By all means see the rest; there isn’t a great deal which isn’t immediately comprehensible from the numerous photographs. Also see more general photographs here and here, and some particularly nice Hong Kong cityscapes here.
There was a place like that?
Looks like I need to go out more
As interesting as this article is,…
I would like to see an ongoing thread of something akin to a travel blog. But not filled with tourist traps.
Rather something that a lot of our peers seem to take for granted.
I’d really like to see pics of areas that we “live”.
For example, when ever you visit a photo share site, like flicker or google images, the one thing that is missing is general living spaces – or neighborhoods.
It may seem ordinary and mundane to our selves because we see it everyday & live around it.
But to others, from abroad, from their perspective it is intriguing to see those places that people take for granted. From the view finders perspective.
Streets of a neighborhood, parks, malls, the view from your window – roof tops, and the city scape, rural places; parklands, farms, docks.
The street from the view of your cat or dog, how it all looks from their point of view.
Taking a fresh look at the things we seem to take for granted.
I’ve been to Japan when I was very small (got relatives there), but haven’t had the opportunity to visit as a grown up. I do miss seeing the country side but have no pics – just murky memories from a child’s point of view.
Its poignant to see the countryside of Japan, all be it fleeting, in snipets of news segments, and screen shots of old drama programs, and from interpetations of screen shots from anime series – like Natsume Youujincho or AIR.
These environments are fleeting, as it won’t be there in some cases because by the time we get around to visiting on our own eventually, it won’t be there.
Getting there may be a task because we have jobs, responsibilities to family and other relations, bills to pay, other mundane tasks that bind us to the place we call home.
It would be nice to visit these places, without having to be troubled with sitting in a plane, going through airport security, having to get a hotel, renting a car, losing your luggage, getting robbed by a local hoodlum, getting lost, and getting side tracked because your travel mates want to visit the tourist traps you so earnestly want to avoid.
So the next time, if you happen to be walking down the street, and happen to have your camera with you, take a few pics and post it under the heading “my neighborhood”. Because there is likely someone out there on the internet, who has some nostalgia about the places that you take for granted.
i’ve been to all those places and i feel i want to go back there again lol XD
HK otaku pride =]
It’s scary when I know where all those places are……..exact locations too >.<
