While K-ON may still be debatable, Hyouka IS better than Haruhi, by virtue of the original novel predating the whole "moeshit" phenomenon, and thus actually has depth in its story.

Are you fucking retarded? I'll answer that question: yes.

Here is the release timeline of the books of both series:

Volume 11 - The Astonishment of Suzumiya Haruhi (Second part) / 第十一巻: 涼宮ハルヒの驚愕(後)(Published May 25, 2011)

    Hyouka:

氷菓 You can't escape / The niece of time (31 October 2001) ISBN 978-4-04-427101-5

ふたりの距離の概算 It walks by past (26 June 2010) ISBN 978-4-04-874075-3

Do you know when K-On was released as an anime? 2009. How about Lucky Star? 2007.

Hell, do you even realize that the original Haruhi anime wasn't even animated in a moe artstyle? That didn't start until the later animations of it.

FYI, I have read all of the Haruhi books. I believe just one arc in them contains more plot than the whole fucking series of Hyouka.

The short bus called, they want you back.

I thought Hyouka was a nice return to form for KyoAni after the Endless Eight crap and years of adapting simple 4koma gag manga*. However, I really don't think it compares to the likes of season 1 Haruhi, Full Metal, and their KEY series (especially AIR). In fact, looking at this list, I'd say it's another sad case of otaku short-term memory. -_-

*For the record, I liked Lucky Star and K-ON! (have yet to check out Nichijou). However, they're far from the best shows that KyoAni put out, and I can agree that it turned them overly moe-focused for a while (didn't help that K-ON!'s art-style had to leak into season 2 Haruhi).

Painful to see FMP that low. I still pray for more. On the whole it was definitely their most engrossing show that covered all aspects: emotional, action, world-building, fun as hell. Granted it's based off an existing story, but so are most of their others. Among their list alone though, it's the most unique because it actually had focused growth in both world and character plots.

I will definitely admit FMP on its own wasn't particularly amazing, but without the initial FMP story, Fumoffu would not have had the leeway and preexisting world we were used to with which to let Sousuke go batshit crazy awesome and screw with it.

First belongs to Haruhi or Clannad.

What the hell do they even use as criteria to rank them? Is it animation quality? Artwork? Plot? Music?

For example, personally I think that the second season of K-On was inferior to the first mostly because there was less actual music in it and more moemoe.

The second season of K-On had MORE music than the first. It was just spread out more because the season was longer.

According to San.Com. (or 2chan; I don't really care who made this up) there are 2 types of anime fans(A.K.A otaku):
    Type A
A person who simply enjoys “anime.”
    Is proud of Japan’s anime.
Evaluates anime based on direction, voice acting, art, etc.
Hates shallow anime with no real content.
    Story emphasis >>>>> Moe anime.

    and Type B
A person who simply enjoys “characters.”
Will watch an anime if it includes cute or beautiful characters.
Doesn’t care if story is awful, as long as the characters are of interest.
Evaluates anime based on which seiyuu are in it and what the characters look like.
Loves moe elements. Doesn’t like complex anime.
The otaku the media picks up on are usually this kind.
Doesn’t know that much about anime and so is often criticized by Type A otaku.
However, they make much better customers than the more discerning Type A otaku.

Of course, many anime fans have elements from both the Type A and B classification, but usually the characteristics from one type overwhelm those from the other type.

I am type AB anime otaku:

    Type A
A person who simply enjoys “anime.”
    Is proud of Japan’s anime.
Evaluates anime based on direction, voice acting, art, etc.
Hates shallow anime with no real content.
Can see there can be good story also in moe anime!

    +Type B
A person who simply enjoys “characters.”
Will watch an anime if it includes cute or beautiful characters.
Evaluates anime based on which seiyuu are in it and what the characters look like.
Loves moe elements. Does like complex anime, if complexity is meaningful.
Knows much more about anime than any plain, narrow minded Type A otaku.
AB is very discerning type of otaku, but still good customer.
