While Sanya is based on a Soviet pilot, her country is probably hardly communist, as it's called the Orussian EMPIRE in the series, which is more based on the real life Russian Empire.

Same for Germany, where its the Karlsland EMPIRE, no doubt based on the German Empire pre-WWII. It's bordered by the Ostmark Empire, which is an Austro-Hungarian Empire clone. This suggests the geo-political climate in the SW world prior to the Neuroi invasion is still at pre-WWI levels, meaning a WWI-like global conflict never happened.

Arte, perhaps an Eila x Sanya pic would have been more suitable for the cover pic for this article, reflecting the "Finno-Soviet" title. So the Eila and Perrine sauna pic, while quite saucy, is rather misleading.

Eila x Sanya is probably my favourite SW yuri couple, since they both love each other without reservation.

Crowning Moment of Heartwarming:
Eila says she's willing to go wherever Sanya goes when Sanya contemplated whether to fly back to Orussia upon seeing it from orbit.

But I had to wonder, you fly so high the air is gone, thus making it lethal without magic, and yet the magic won't provide warmth? Not to mention, why wear ear muff and scarves and nice warm jackets, and then remain with nothing below the waist but panties?

Never thought panties were so warm.

Its a really good episode aside from the odd censoring like the horizontal laser censor.

Loved the part where they shot down the tower neuroi. Beautiful and nicely done. The song 'Sweet Duet' at that part makes it much more better.

Why wasn't Sky Girls as popular?

All I know in History Russians they did have females Pilots they were very good I believe the German's called them "Night Witches".

Best part about Eila's tail wagging was that it was "ad-libbed" by the animators.

Fun fact: Finland beat the living shit outta Russia during the Winter war of 1939/1940 (even though the Reds eventually prevailed). Arguably two of the most virulent enemies of the whole World War II era.

I just love the Irony in the Eila/Sanya pairing...
