While Sanya is based on a Soviet pilot, her country is probably hardly communist, as it's called the Orussian EMPIRE in the series, which is more based on the real life Russian Empire.

Same for Germany, where its the Karlsland EMPIRE, no doubt based on the German Empire pre-WWII. It's bordered by the Ostmark Empire, which is an Austro-Hungarian Empire clone. This suggests the geo-political climate in the SW world prior to the Neuroi invasion is still at pre-WWI levels, meaning a WWI-like global conflict never happened.

Arte, perhaps an Eila x Sanya pic would have been more suitable for the cover pic for this article, reflecting the "Finno-Soviet" title. So the Eila and Perrine sauna pic, while quite saucy, is rather misleading.

Eila x Sanya is probably my favourite SW yuri couple, since they both love each other without reservation.

    Crowning Moment of Heartwarming:
Eila says she's willing to go wherever Sanya goes when Sanya contemplated whether to fly back to Orussia upon seeing it from orbit.

HNNNNGGG. Don't think I've ever been this touched by such a yuri moment ever since Fate held Nanoha's hand and bade each other a tearful farewell at the end of Nanoha season 1.

In a way it was so damn unexpected from a series like Strike Witches that my heart just dropped when Eila cried and said it.

Yes it was indeed the 6th ep.

    And a nice one too.

WW2 fans will enjoy the nicely done Lancaster bomber.

But I had to wonder, you fly so high the air is gone, thus making it lethal without magic, and yet the magic won't provide warmth? Not to mention, why wear ear muff and scarves and nice warm jackets, and then remain with nothing below the waist but panties?

Never thought panties were so warm.

Its a really good episode aside from the odd censoring like the horizontal laser censor.

Loved the part where they shot down the tower neuroi. Beautiful and nicely done. The song 'Sweet Duet' at that part makes it much more better.

Fun fact: Finland beat the living shit outta Russia during the Winter war of 1939/1940 (even though the Reds eventually prevailed). Arguably two of the most virulent enemies of the whole World War II era.

I just love the Irony in the Eila/Sanya pairing...

After the Winter War and Continuation War, Finland reckons they're too close to Russia for NATO to even come to their aid if they piss Stalin off and gets invaded again, in which they'll just end up like Poland and the Baltic States, which ended up under the Soviet sphere.

So Finland adopted a policy of keeping an at-arms-length distance from the Western block by declaring themselves neutral and being as friendly to Russia as possible.

Detractors call this policy which lasted until the Soviet Union's collapse at the end of the Cold War as "Finlandization", or "the art of bowing to the East without mooning the West", as by trying not to offend the Soviets, they would go so far as to send back any asylum seekers escaping to their border as well as censor any media reports critical of the Soviets.

    Still, Eila x Sanya FTW.

We almost beat the crap out of them, but we kinda still lost. Small Finland vs. Gigantic Russia... wth... moral victory goes to us :D

And finnish ppl still seem to somewhat hate russians (so still somewhat of a enemies) :p

But still... just have to love this pairing^^
    Especially Sanya :o

I think that has to do more with the fact that Russians fill every city in Finland once their summer vacation begins. Not all of them but many cause trouble like littering, general distress and speeding they can't be even fined for.

It's not really their fault, rather it's more of a difference in the cultures. Although since Finland is in general cleaner, safer and much more expensive you'd think they would at least try to uphold these two things that seem to make Finland such a desired holiday destination for them.

Russians usually just don't give a shit, which makes them difficult for the Finnish to understand. I think it's a misconception to think that the Finnish were still bitter over the War or something.

Well, with the money they leave during summer beach music festivals in my country as tourists...

Newest record - some Russians paid 20k EUR a day for renting a house near beach this year. It was on the local news even. With that, you'd tolerate almost anything, I guess it's similar in Finland.

The Finland was morally right and Russians were no better than Nazi during WW2.

Finland had better organization and strategy while Russia had numbers and air force superiority. Should the global powers start to shift again, they'd be at it again. Sucks to be neighboring them...

I know I can't believe people don't recognize cell shading when they see it.I always notice it and it usually looks cheesy and out of place.

Of course it's highly detailed when the characters were pre-rendered. This season has a huge drop in production costs compared to the first season.

Cell shading is a truly genius invention as it makes our lives even easier.

Also it's what makes long battle scenes among detailed robots like in Gundam 00 possible! The 70ties hand-drawn shit is unwatchable.
