The reign of quality publisher Kadokawa continues with the news that both second episodes of Haruhi-chan and Churuya-san have been released quietly without drama or boatwatching; however, fans may be dismayed to note that the main feature is barely longer than its opening, having become even shorter.
Additionally, Kadokawa have seen fit to completely remove the first episodes (update: they seem to have restored them after a significant period of them being taken offline)…

Kadokawa’s grotesque marketing of its Haruhi-chan anime (to say nothing of the rerun of the original) seems to have resulted in such a negative backlash that their marketing department has launched itself into urgent damage control, replacing the “it wasn’t ready” nice boat announcement with a typically grovelling Japanese apology:

After their jolly little marketing jape to drum up a storm of conversation amongst the sad remnants of Haruhi’s fanbase, Kadokawa have graciously deigned to broadcast Haruhi-chan on YouTube after all.

Fans hoping to see the scheduled broadcast of Haruhi parody anime Haruhi-chan tuned in eagerly to their YouTube channel today, but were instead greeted with a 46 second “nice boat” video announcing that the video had not materialised, and nothing more.

Bandai has begun free distribution of Pizza Hut anime Code Geass, with Gundam 00 set to follow, via YouTube, in both subbed and dubbed versions, but unfortunately it has escaped their attention that there are anime fans and potential viewers outside the US, for the time being at least.

It seems the only major confirmed Haruhi title, “Haruhi-chan”, has not even fully begun production, leading many to doubt whether a 2009 release is likely.

Major anime and manga publisher Kadokawa claims revenues of 10 million yen monthly from YouTube advertising revenue sharing on its YouTube-based Kadokawa Anime Channel, both from episode and MAD viewing, and reports 50 million views from September to November of 2008; they now promise to recognise fan-made videos they like, and naturally to receive their due.
This is, they would have us believe, proof that a new business model based on online distribution and liberal usage rights is commercially viable.
Much of this success is said to be due to the effect of Haruhi, Lucky Star, and Strike Witches.

You may have heard of Haruhi spinoff/parody manga 涼宮ハルヒちゃんの憂鬱 / The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan (see below), by ぷよ / Puyo, a superb and most amusing manga using the SOS-dan, but eschewing the ridiculous story and serious elements of the original in favour of parody and absurdity (famously Nagato is a determined erogamer, for example).
It has gained great popularity, and even the authors of the original have stated that they should probably made the main story like it; the popularity has allowed an anime adaptation, just announced.
