Opponents of US bases in Okinawa have outraged many Japanese by resorting to “terrorist” tactics, including vandalising the fences around the bases and then laying “traps” for those trying to clean them up.

Asahi reports that 20,000 US military personnel stationed in Japan are to be subjected to background checks to weed out those likely to cause a reoccurrence of something likely to further impugn the already dubious reputation of US forces stationed chiefly in Okinawa. They will be given “counselling” to help them suppress their soldierly impulses towards the citizens of Japan, and those that fail will be sent home.
