Police have released one of Sunrise’s anime directors after arresting him for threatening to go on a killing spree in Osaka’s otaku district, having ignored his protestations of innocence whilst doggedly maintaining “we have proof – your IP address!” – only to discover his PC was being remotely controlled by a virus inflicted on him by 2ch.

Maid cafes have lately come under scrutiny for exploiting both otaku and children, with the manager of one cafe being arrested for having 14-year-old girls serve his patrons, and others coming under fire for their extortionate charges and failure to register as establishments offering “personal” service.

The 8th Nipponbashi Street Festa looks to have been the biggest ever, with 220,000 cramming the streets of Osaka amidst scenes of outstanding cosplay and creepiness.

The recent Nipponbashi Street Fest 2010 provided many Kansai-area otaku a chance to celebrate their true colors in Osaka’s own version of Akihabara, an opportunity that can sometimes be quite rare for those living out of reach of Tokyo.
The metallic masses of itasha were one of the most visible signs of otaku presence, and a few dozen of the inspiring vehicles can be seen below…

A pair of men have been arrested for mugging 50 people, all described as “looking like otaku”, stealing and extorting some ¥3,000,000 in total from them as they walked the streets of Osaka’s answer to Akihabara, Nipponbashi.
It appears they were targeted based on the (correct in this case) perception that otaku are weak and will bend to any threat.
